  • I feel a bit stupid asking, but by what mechanism is there likely to be another election soon?

  • Most likely: Leadership contest, new Tory leader would require a mandate from a GE
2nd most likely: Vote of no confidence in the current government

  • The folk that did the yougov polling won't be short of a job offer or two this morning.

  • I think there may not actually be a need for a majority because of the impact of Brexit. Party lines are cut down the middle, the Tories may be able to go ahead with a minority government knowing they could get other leave/remain MP's to vote along with them.

  • Can the Queen tell May to do one?

  • Most likely: Leadership contest, new Tory leader would require a mandate from a GE

Not required. And after May's utter fuck up, I'd put odds against it (an election to cement electoral support of a new Tory leader) happening.

  • I'm pretty sure in theory, yes. But I think it would result in a constitutional crisis. In theory Corbyn has as much right to make his proposal for forming a government as May.

  • Didn't dup members blow up some royals?

  • DUP have said they expect May to depart within a year

  • Does the May2 Government even make it to the Parliamentary Summer Recess, 21/22 July?

  • Going to be a tough sell for those now in seats with tiny majorities that they should vote for another election against the fixed term act

  • Some guy on BBC early this morning, referred to a "cabinet manual" and said that the incumbent government has first refusal on attempting to form a govt.

  • first refusal

    By the Queen, no?

  • ^^ it's this kind of chat, in my head, that makes me wonder about the likliehood of another election soon.

  • yup, it was a bad attempt at a joke

  • If only... like Brexit nationalism overrides anything with the DUP.

They do FUCK ALL for the area I am on a national level, have been involved in a corruption scandal, said they'd block gay marriage, but people still voted for them.

They may embarrass Westminster into taking action, but I doubt that as the last Secretary of states were all Tory shills and fuck NI.

[jaysus this places makes one bitter... not even from here! Come back Dutch King William 3 all is forgiven he would do a better job!]

  • Another election may be another nail in the coffin for the Tories. I liked @WornCleat 's post. Stay positive.

  • A strange new world to wake up to. Corbyn-is he still unelectable? The shout of "is this strong and stable prime minister" as she lurched into the ministerial Jag was a vintage moment.

  • Lol at the terrorist sympathising extremist remarks now too. Fucking hubris ya bass.

  • Unelectabullshit.

  • That would require MPs to vote for an election (because of the fixed term parliament act) and given events of the past 24 hours that is highly unlikely to be successful.

Sorry guy we have too many nationalistic asshats in here... SF also made big gains, and all moderate parties lost (though the UUP did it to themselves, so did the SDLP, but even Alliance didn't win)

  • The question was "but by what mechanism is there likely to be another election soon?"

It wasn't "What is likely to happen soon?"

If there was going to be an election it would either be self induced (leadership contest) or brought on by the opposition going for a vote of no confidence.
