Gobsmacked is a word that really annoys me.

Overwhelm is an irritating word. Whelm means to overcome, submerge, engulf. Which makes the 'over' bit a little superfluous.

There I was, happily drowning away at the bottom of the canal, when it started to rain as well. Left me feeling totally overwhelmed, it did.

Might be a bit like overkill. The result is the same but it's a bit more for good measure.
I also hate gutted.
