tl;dr WWI and the subsequent breakup of the Ottoman Empire followed by European land/grabs in the Middle East sowed the seeds for modern day sectarian violence in those areas.
The Hardcore History podcast on WW1 is worth a listen. It's kind of shocking when you realise how much it shaped the world today.
