russia have a large monopoly on europes gas supply which would be tricky for us if political tensions rise
It's not a monopoly but they do have a dominant position
we don't have the capacity at the terminals to allow lng to supply all europes needs currently
We're already building a pipeline through Turkey from Azerbaijan to address this problem

before the civil war in Syria, there was a plan to extend the existing Arab Gas Pipeline that currently goes as far as Lebanon, potentially to the Turkish border. This would provide a route for Egyptian gas (this was before they found themselves a bit short of supply in recent years) and potentially from other discoveries in the east Med to reach Turkey and maybe even plug into the TANAP pipeline that's being built for the Azeri gas. But, no plans to invade to build it.

I agree,
the cost of the natural gas in & to Qatar is so cheap that they can afford to turn it into liquids that have a much larger market, with a ready built suppy chain, than LNG. -

Their LNG trains have made them rather a lot more money than the Pearl GTL facility, which was massively late and overbudget because it was at the time technology untested at such large scale. Vastly more of their production is exported as LNG.

If anyone's interested in more on the gas angle, this isn't bad

Apparently UAE and KSA have decreed that expressing sympathy for Qatar on social media is now a crime punishable by up to 15 years in jail.

The Mayor said in the interview that terror attacks were “part and
parcel of life in the big city”.No he didn't.
The Mayor said in the interview that terror attacks were “part and
parcel of life in the big city”.No he didn't. Khan said that "Being prepared" was part and parcel. Right wing bellends on Facebook keep twisting that quote, so is Trump jnr, so is the Evening Standard.

Perhaps I'll look for a book on post WW1 history in that region.
This link has an interesting perspective on that:
tl;dr WWI and the subsequent breakup of the Ottoman Empire followed by European land/grabs in the Middle East sowed the seeds for modern day sectarian violence in those areas.

The Hardcore History podcast on WW1 is worth a listen. It's kind of shocking when you realise how much it shaped the world today.

What I find really awful is imagining how this poor guy must have struggled while in the river, quite likely injured, while above him (and probably also on the Thames Path) nobody noticed him dying.
RIP Xavier Thomas.

Ha
a) the liquefaction facilities are already built, so the costs are sunk
b) the revenue from the NGLs that come out of the North Field mean that the marginal cost of LNG production is effectively zero, and sometimes negative
c) Qatar already ships gas to Europe in tankers and it's already cheaper than pipeline gas from Russia (see point (b))
