Clavicle Error - Broken Collarbone

  • Quick update.

Two weeks are gone, taking the staples out was more painful than breaking the bone. Thanks chatty NHS nurse.
I managed to reschedule my appointment from the 18th of Jan to tomorrow (8th Dec), it only took 2 phone calls per day for the past week, and one lucky cancellation!

Arm and shoulder already feel very solid, even if I am sure the bone isn't completely healed yet. Struggling to refrain myself from my own eagerness to get back to 100%, but I'm incredibly sick of not being independent and able.

  • So after six months my clavicle still looks like this.

Operation is booked for February. Has any one had a bone graft from their hip? Sounds worse than actually breaking it in the first place!

  • My girlfriend had a graft to put back the full 10mm her ulna was missing after three breaks over the years. Made recovery a bit more annoying by having two sore bits rather than one, but otherwise was pretty straightforward.

  • thats odd. Not sure what the bone graft is about. your xray looks alot like mine did, but they just operated on me-put some kind of pin in and some man made replacement ligament stuff to replace the torn ligaments. Healed pretty well and quickly-maybe 6 weeks tops. All fine now, save for feeling slightly 'knobbly' and looking a bit odd-that and a strange new tendency to sprout random fur on that shoulder, which disturbs me more than anything else tbh.

  • I think its because the length of time it was taken for them to decide to plate it, the bone fragment is not in a good way so they use the hip bone as a booster. I'm still annoyed they didn't do the surgery when I had the accident rather than hope that it was going to join naturally.

  • Shit! 6 months is a long time! I'd be super annoyed.. I had surgery right away and I'm incredibly happy with that decision. Good luck buddy

  • They kept saying it would mend on its own so no need for surgery the fuckers! Cheers man just waiting for the date so I can sort out some leave with work.

  • I got back on the bike today, 7 weeks after breaking it. Very glad of having had surgery as I feel that made things a lot easier.

First ride was super spooky, especially given the tube strike madness.

Can someone tell me about the plate removal? Did you have to stop cycling or doing other activities after the surgery? Did you feel any difference (weaker) at all?

  • I had my plate removed on a Friday and rode to work on the following Monday. Probably should have waited a few days, as the vibrations going over bumps on 23mm tyres sent some very sharp pains through the stitches. I think I stopped riding for the rest of the week, but it was three years ago, so not sure.

Pretty sure the bone felt fine and they didn't forbid me from doing anything, but everyone's case is different.

  • Did mine on Saturday. At the time I had no pain at all. 2 days on and it's really painful, got almost no sleep last night. It's really nice outside and I want to ride!

I really want them to just pin it now but I have to wait at least a week before the fracture clinic will look at pinning it

  • Pre-Op assesment today for my day op on Monday after almost 9 months after breaking it.

  • Does anyone need an arm sling? (Rather good looking one) Free for grabs. Served me fine, hope it can do the same for someone else.

  • Had my op on Monday. I forgot how hard it is to sleep with a shoulder in agonising pain. Now I'm in a drug fueled haze trying to work out what my name is.

  • Separated the AC joint in my left shoulder 2.5 years ago after being hit by a car. Had physio and a steroid injection into it and mostly it's fine.

It's painful however when I spend any length of time in the drops. Not wanting a huge scoble stack under my stem, is there any gym work I could do to strengthen the area a bit ?

  • If I do heavy shrugs, my (previously broken) clavicle clicks and then really hurts, so maybe watch out for that one if recommended to you.

Personally I did lots of lateral raises, and also worked the opposite muscles in my back to help with being in an aero position.

  • Yeah, not sure that AC (acromioclavicular) joint separation is quite the same as a broken clavicle. Perhaps a really good physiotherapist could help though. Maybe there's one on here?

  • I went in and got some xrays the other week. I feel they went a bit overboard on the screws!

  • At least yours are straight! I am on the waiting list for the plate removal. 100% healed after 5months.

  • wtf, they let you keep it?! Bloody Whittington told me it was against regulations!

  • Well jealous about that. That thing looks brand new?

  • I'm 100% sure you should make that into a bottle opener.

  • It is, I sort of stole it..

  • Was thinking of using it somehow, could be a bracket to mount a front light on the rack
