  • I think this sort of thing isn't just people not checking just before manoeuvring. I would guess that these are people who don't really do much checking of mirrors/general making sure you're aware of what's going on around you. When I check my mirrors to turn, its to make sure nothing has popped up since I last checked them. Not to, for the first time, see what's going on around me.
    Glad you're ok.

  • I'm fine, it was close, and I'm glad it went my way rather than the other, just a sickening feeling when despite riding on the roads for years, being aware and knowledgeable about what traffic's doing or could do, something like this happens which erodes your faith in your cycling abilities.
A warning, which I feel like I didn't need, about how unpredictable and careless drivers can be, which ultimately could cause me serious injury.

  • Wasn't sure where to put this, Avon and Somerset police on the Close Pass operation on twitter:

    Avon&Somerset Police‏Verified account @ASPolice Hi Albert, cyclists
should also be leaving the same about of space when passing a vehicle.

    Avon&Somerset Police‏Verified account @ASPolice Replying to
@Sir_Angry Hi there, bikes should not be 'overtaking' cars. But it
would apply if they were undertaking a vehicle.

  • the inability of drivers to check in their wing mirrors before turning the steering wheel.

It's worse when they overtook you in a manner that they are aware you are there, yet decided not to take caution in turning left moment afterward.

  • cyclists shouldn't be overtaking cars? cyclists should leave 1.5m when 'undertaking'?

    very odd.

  • It was in response to "Sir Angry", who asked the perennial question about whether cyclists should leave 1.5m when overtaking drivers. In that context it still makes no sense. There is no sense to a police officer saying "Cyclists should not be overtaking cars". It's baffling.

  • Filtering != undertaking

  • something like this happens which erodes your faith in your cycling abilities.

Don't be too hard on yourself dude. It was likely the level of your cycling abilities that prevented you from ending up under the car, in spite of the lack of attention.

  • If you don't learn from your mistakes you'll keep on making them.

  • Lots of near misses on here recently, I normally associate poor weather with poor driving, looks like that's out the window.

To add my story, last Wednesday I was on my way to collect my better 1/3 from her office (first day commuting from our new place) and had a very near miss. Cycling down Faringdon St in the cycle lane, car approaches the junction with Smithfield (on my left) at speed, perpendicular with me and without any right of way. Assume he's seen me, but I was wrong, doesn't stop before the junction and continues straight out into the road with me perfectly between the headlamps. No idea how I rescued it (must have been mm between bumper and rear tyre when I passed), shook me up for a few hours.

  • ^Hate that junction - cars/lorries come down Smithfield at such speed you're never sure they're going to stop.
There's also the added pleasure of cars turning right from the opposite direction.

  • Today's close pass douche

  • ^No other choice

  • ^other than not overtaking on a corner?

  • my better 1/3

is this how you show off you are in a threesome?

  • Corner + Hill = Stupid fucking place to overtake. Also, given the two "choices" of drive towards the person protected by a steel cocoon or potentially flatten the person out in the open air, thanks to your careless manoeuvre, they took the wrong one.

  • Don't normally see many other cyclists on my commute but got passed by a fella on a nice carbon bike the other day. Sped up as he passed and caught a tow for a mile or two till we got to some lights. It was bliss, an easy 22 odd mph with very little effort on my part, 10/10 would draft again.

  • Did the long ride in from Herts again yesterday, weather apps said 10mph headwind in, felt like more. But... The promised 20mph tailwind home actually happened and was amazing. Doing 25mph without trying up past Edmonton etc was lovely. Had to briefly turn into wind just before home and realised that what had felt like gentle drops of rain were actually icy pins being flung into my eyes, arms and knees.

  • If I was, harsh on the other 1/3!

    1/3 by mass.

  • Yucko. Had to take a bonus shower at work to stop the shivers. Still waiting to warm up.

  • I was wavering as i munched my cornflakes staring out as our sunflowers struggled against the gusts, rain lashing against the window. Quick check on wind direction confirmed a 30mph downwinder swung it for me. Felt for anyone going west. Fast and Splashy/10
