been reading about frame savers (e.g. jp weigle / boiled linseed oil) -- anyone do this with their surly frame? about to start building up my straggler...
noted that it's ED coated, but is that enough?

Don't think Coast kid does anything special to his frames that live on the beaches of Scotland.
Never done anymore than squirt some WD40/GT85 down the tubes on my KM and other steel frames.
If it gets filled with water, just strip the frame down, drain, dry, squirt of lube, job done. -

Took the ol Cross Check out for an extremely hilly 7-day tour. Will probably install Jones Bars and maybe go for a Turkey Vulture gearing at some point this summer, but:

Those tires on the brown frame look ace!

Thanks! I think they give it a sorta National Park Service vibe, which I'm quite pleased with.

That's really nice. I was considering switching my front triple down to a single. What's the group and what cassette do you have on the back?
I'm also going to switch out drops for Jone style bars.

I was able to get some second hand Jones bars which made them nearly affordable. No regrets as they are awesome. Didn't realise how much fun and how comfy they'd be.

A while back I discovered rust holes in the chainstays of my 50+ year old Flying Scot so went out and bought some framesaver. I've done a couple of my frames but not all f them. I should really. It's a piece of piss (especially if you have a bare frame) and if it does *any*thing then it's probably worthwhile.
Caveat, while the Scot drops flakes of rust out the seatube at any opportunity and you can hear all the tubes are full of rust from it tinkling around inside , it is from the 1950s, has spent a lot of it's life in damp garages/sheds and probably wasn't built of the best stuff to start with. It's original owner is no longer of this earth. So, you probably don't need to worry really.

I managed to get some of the Alpkit ones before they sold out.

Those bicycle especially the Surly are quite overbuild, it be centuries before rust actually start to eat away the bike enough to break it.
I found one on the post event track walk, might still have it........ :)
