I've seen this theory posited elsewhere as well. Driving a van into people is obviously indiscriminate, but it's plausible that the (comparatively) 'liberal' attitude towards the role and place of women in Western society is something which is particularly under attack.
I teach a number of young Muslim women at the college where I work, who would happily shout down anyone who tried to tell them that they were going to limit their rights or opportunities. They're a great reminder that this mindless violence is usually limited to a small number of pathetic men.

Makes me think that misogyny is strong motivator for these guys. To the extent that the religious framework is only secondary to their basic sexual frustration.
