Rethreading French frame

Posted on
  • Hi all,

Has anyone managed to rethread a French BB shell in order to fit a modern BB?
I've been searching far and wide but haven't found a decent solution yet...

I have a Basque made frame that I want to use for a decent road setup.
Was planning on getting the new 105 group.

    Cheers

  • £90 here for a pro job of ream out threads, sleeve and rethread

No idea if french threading apply's to modern shimano parts or if you can french thread BB to run a modern chainset set up.

  • It's hiding under "Braze on parts and fittings "

  • Nice find. Great to know it's an option.
Would be cool to hear if anyone had managed it at home... at 90£ The build could add up a lot!

I heard you can make your own thread cutter using an old cup. Anyone tried that?

  • I have a NOS french bottom bracket if you're interested, it's just lying around here.

  • Hi @ilprincipe
Thanks for letting me know. What is it and how much?
The thing is, I'm really looking to use the frame for a modern groupset- which would mean hollow axle.

  • It's a French or Swiss brand if I remember correctly. I can check on Monday if you are interested. I was restoring an old French frame and looked quite some time for a bottom bracket. I'd let go of it for how much I paid (about £25 I think).

But rethreading is probably the better option if you want a modern group. I did the same in the end.

  • HI I can't remember the details right now but isn't there a threadless option you could try, I vaguely remember someone in the past discussing a similar scenario although their problem was damaged threat, Velo Orange I think was one of the suppliers but there are cheaper options, cheers hope this helps
