  • Rise in temps, therefore more energy required to maintain core temp?

  • mental wellbeing can be a major factor. I was in the meat of my marathon training and banging out 12-14 mile runs no problem, had an argument with the missus seconds before leaving for a run and was so angry it completely threw my mojo off and I barely made it 2.5 miles before packing it in and walking back home. just felt like i physically couldn't move faster than a walk.

  • Blisters, once I start running reasonable distances I get blisters on the arch of my feet. I've tried a few different socks and trainers and neither seem to resolve it. Any suggestions?

  • sounds like the support might be the wrong kind for your arch.

this seems to have a lot of info on the subject (and gross photos)

  • I doubt if rice cakes will make a huge difference as they are so low in calories for their size (30-40cal each). Unless your talking about the Team Sky recipe ones.

Coffee and a slice of flapjack or two/three slices of toasted Warburton fruit loaf (92cal per slice before adding butter) is my usual for 13-18 miles at a decent pace.

Pre ultra race is normally porridge and a heap of golden syrup. Then Tailwind on the go.

  • I had a problem with a pair of Brooks Ghost. They fitted very well but running beyond 5k the band of reinforcement I've highlighted would cause a blister as it created a localised hard band on an otherwise soft area . I retired them from running and could walk all day in them without a problem.

Pre taping my arch helped extend the run distance. But only to a point.

  • Cheers, trainers are comfy generally but I did think they could be an issue. Seems that it's possible that they're either too high or too low though which is annoying.

I may give the Engo patches a try. Looks like nothing too much lost if they don't work out.

  • porridge and a heap of golden syrup.

Porridge everyday, defo always on race day. Will have extra mid afternoon porridge this Friday too.

  • @rhb good luck this weekend (I think...), been pretty offline but hope training/prep has gone well!

  • All the best for this weekend @rhb

Haslingden, Blackburn area would be a fantastic run for a black medal.

  • Thanks folks.

Final prep for EfM was to be a family camping trip then morning coastal jog which has become an unplanned night of v.little sleep with ~40% body covered in an itchy rash. I have an allergic reaction to something unknown every couple years, once it starts it becomes touch based. Not pleasant & defo great timing being away from home comforts etc.

At least my body clock is shifted a bit. #silverlining

Should I make it to Altrincham with time to spare I'll be following a route I know well to Bolton (no Nav decisions). Then on to Belmont if time & energy to hit the 90 atcf.

Right now I'm not sure what will happen, 90 feels v.unlikely.

  • Leg. Face & under hair has it worst.

  • That doesn't look good. sucks that you don't know the cause either 😔

  • We've been chatting about it. Think it might be Turmeric related. I cook with v.little (just enough) but last nights (shop bought) dhal was almost powdery with it.

  • After bumbling around the internet last night it turns out these

both start across the road from where I'm housesitting for the next month and a half. No plans to enter (it's in 6 weeks too), but as they've uploaded the map and GPX so that saves me having to find a route while I'm here! Ah... dark, windy winter running...

  • I'm back! After much achilles woe, my first bit of quicker running since pulling out of Bath HM early March was parkrun in Gorky Park, Moscow, a couple of Saturdays ago. Felt very unfit and was chicked by MsPub. (To be fair she's quite quick!) Have since managed a couple of ten milers and lots of cross-training and fitness appears to be coming back. Ran the Battersea Park Assembly League race (5k) last night in 16:57, and achilles feels next to normal, so I'm getting back on the track next week.

Training for L'Etape will ensure a good mix of x-training continuing, but it's nice to be running quickly again without feeling shit.

  • Good news @PhilPub, glad you're fixed up.

I think I am too, after a few months off focusing on cycling and relevant muscle strengthening, I now seem to be running pain-free. First run-commute in a long time today.

Looks pretty uncomfortable @rhb - Hope your body sorts it out by tonight! And good luck!!

  • i can run after a pretty big bowl of porridge, but most of the time, even before long (1-2hr) runs I won't eat anything. couple of coffees gets me through

  • 2pm get up, just finishing brekkie.

Still rashy & itchy. Anti-histamine pills have helped but left me v.groggy so taking on no more but will carry some incase it flares up badly again.

Only need to hit 4.5mph ave with no stops which is a fast walk really.

Apparently I'm number 81. This might change, it did last time iirc.

  • Looks ace. Have you abandoned the van for housesitting gigs?

  • @PhilPub @Pifko glad you're both back to it.

  • We've not abandoned it, we're just giving it a rest and some TLC for a couple of months!

  • Just me passing by being inquisitive again. It's obvious as to why and how running makes me fart, but since I've started running more, my farts have become horrendous, almost smelling like off petrol. (sorry for detail). Does anyone else suffer from or have an explanation? It may be a case for the G.P.

  • are you celebrating each run with a plate of hard boiled eggs?
