I've did this a couple of years ago in May, there are bits just before the junction with the Grand Union ( Bulls Bridge ) that are muddy for 700/23 tyres. I used the south side of the Thames to return, as there are less diversions away from the river with not so many roads so safer and prettier, until you get opposite the Houses of Parliament then its tourists until you cross Tower bridge and pass by St Katherine's dock. Beware them cobbles in Wapping.

Technically that muddy section is also the grand union, it's the Paddington branch all the way down to Little Venice. I was surprised that the regent's canal only runs from lv to Limehouse
