Saving himself for tomorrow.
That presenter who isn't a triple jumper on Eurosport, Brian something, said earlier he thought Quintana, Doomoo, Nibali, Pinot and maybe even Sacharin would all be on the podium.

Got his rest day ride wrong, would be my guess. Either went too hard or not hard enough. He had an off day on the Stelvio stage, also after a rest day, too.
