TBT routes with ride with GPS doesn't require a paid account. You can't download the route from the site via your browser or whatever (as this does require a paid account, I think), but you can set the wahoo to sync with rwgps and it'll transfer everything in your rwgps 'routes' tab (so routes you create and other peoples that you star or pin or whatever) onto the elemnt.
Turn by turn directions? You need to link your account to RWGPS or Komoot and then put routes on there that way. If a RWGPS route has cues then it will put them onto the Elemnt once you copy them to 'my routes'. Komoot will generate cues automatically and you can upload an existing GPX file to it, but you need to buy maps for it and then it'll mess around with your route and basically it's all a bit fiddly... though does basically work quite well from my one experiment with it.
So far I've got by with copying other people's routes with cues off RWGPS and not paying for a proper account (I've mainly wanted TBT on audaxes where other people have already created routes), but if you want to do more complicated stuff yourself you probably need to pay for a rwgps account that lets you create routes with cues.
Hopefully a future update will make it a bit easier...
Still better than garmin though.
