  • Don't they still have technicians to sort all that stuff out? We did manage to set a desk on fire but that was with a 'spilled' beaker of officially-supplied ethanol for electrolysis and some wanton sparking.

  • What I've got is five unlocked school labs and an unlocked ground floor Prep Room with, amongst loads of other things, 4 x 5litre containers of 2M Hydrochloric Acid and a COSSH cupboard with the key in the lock. Also a large dumb waiter lift fully functioning to an upstairs Prep Room where more stuff is accessible. This has all been unlocked since 4.00pm and I'm locking up at 10.00pm.

  • Is it your job to give them a bollocking about it?

  • Lock up after the cleaners have finished, and assume that anyone who is supposed to be in those rooms will have a key?

It being a school, the fallout from duty of care issues can be prodigious. You can't assume the little buggers will accept rules, read notices, follow instructions or use some common sense. You probably can assume that parents will want a scapegoat when the fruit of their loins demonstrates dangerous stupidity.

As a separate issue, my recollection of COSHH cupboards was that 'lockable' did not mean 'must be locked', but I'm going back a few years...
