Sorry to be slow responding to this discussion.

It seems to me that for twelve we all need whatever help we can get.

If you've got a helper I think it would be crazy not to bring a spare bike. Emergencies do happen, things can go wrong unexpectedly and punctures are to be expected.

In my own first twelve I was 'instructed' by my helpers to change from TT bike to a more comfortable road bike. They were right, and although my distance was pretty feeble, I did at least finish and so achieved a p.b. (the first attempt at a distance is bound to be a best as long as you finish!). I'd say that for a first twelve comfort is far and away the most important feature of the bike.

I don't think you've said which event you're riding. If it's the Newbury, I'd say fixed should be ok - as you probably know it has been won recently with an excellent mileage done on single freewheel. The Kent course would be riskier: those flat roads in the marshes may look tempting, but it's almost always windy, plus you've got a tough climb late in the day up to the finishing circuit. Personally I'd still choose Kent because riding up and down the A31 all day would drive me insane. These are the only two events still existing of which I have any experience.

If a spare back wheel (sprint or pressure) for a different sprocket would be useful, send me a p.m.

Incidentally, and this is only hearsay, but I understand the Newbury event may have trouble with the HQ - new management don't want to open up early enough. May be worth checking.

    Anyway - Good luck!

I think @rach_e has already said that this is the reason for the change of HQ compared with previous years.

  • Yep, the Newbury. Have roped my Dad in to help as my partner is conveniently away.

Will likely bring spare fixed rear wheel and road bike.
