I don't think it was a deliberate act of kindness. He had been going balls out for 222km, was inevitably on his vinegar strokes and Nibali's DS specifically told him to make sure he was first in that corner, I can only guess that Landa didn't get the same instruction with the result being that be got mugged on the line. Nibali's a much more experienced operator as well so he knows how to get the job done.

A mistake. He was less prepared to be in a position to win than Nibs so didn't know the finish like Nibs did?
