  • That's been pretty much the norm in places like Rome and Paris for a while now. It's a strange sight. Unfortunately, it probably does fuck-all.

  • The objective isn't always about safety. Its also designed to bolster public confidence. At times like this, that's important even to the skeptical and the cynical.
    A decline in public confidence would have a domino effect on social cohesion, national productivity, national self worth, crime and disorder etc. It generally leads to a downward spiral. Its the sort of action we should expect, even if there weren't an impending election.

    I'm not saying this is the best response but it certainly isn't the worst.
