cheers @GavBGlasgow
We've been up and looked at loads of places - mainly Dowanhill and Hyndland. We're just amazed at how different the property market is up there, what with closing dates, blind bidding and the Offers Over vs Home Report business. Big learning curve for us at the moment. But, we're getting there.
Cheers again

Managed to get an offer accepted on a place in Hyndland. Wooot! Looks like we'll be in Glasgow from mid February if all goes to to plan. Super excited about this. Thanks to everyone for their advice above, it made looking at places much easier with a little knowledge in hand.
Thanks again

Nice one! Anywhere near Clarence drive? I'm close to there if you fancy a ride once the spring rolls around again.

Congrats. You'll love it there.

Yeah @gillies just round the corner from Clarence Drive. We're cautiously optimistic it'll happen as we're hoping - buying/selling rarely goes smoothly (in my experience) but we'll see! It would be awesome to go for a ride once spring arrives too.
@onyerbike from what we've seen so far, we've loved it. And, everyone we've met has been incredibly kind and friendly to us. We can't wait!

Does anyone commute to Edinburgh from Glasgow? I have potential job offers in both Glasgow (where I'll be living) and Edinburgh. I'm trying to weigh them up, there's many factors I know, but anyone with insider knowledge on the commute would be great. Cheers!

Avoid commuting. I used to go GLA>EDI 5 times a week and it was grim.
It's a pain in the arse. Takes minimum 2 hours out of your day. Expensive and the trains are always overcrowded and often late.
Live where you work, if you can.

All done and contracts exchanged on our flat. I'll be in Glasgow mid Feb.
Will get in touch with you lot soon once I've settled in. And, thanks so much for all the helpful advice above, much appreciated.

Where did you end up?

In Hyndland which seems like a nice place. Just off Clarence Drive.
Looking forward to getting out and riding to explore the city!

Are there any good facebook groups or something like that to find a houseshare? I'm in a few for Bristol that are invite only and they tend to have the best stuff
Cheers

Lived in Clarence gardens over a summer way back, happy days.
Five years in Belhaven terrace west.
The west end is a great place to live.

Twas suggested I post this here.... a smart way of hanging/storing a bike if you live in a block. Leaves you hands free to d lock to the rails.
Hillhead, Hyndland, Woodlands, Dowanhill, Kelvinbridge, Kelvinside for West End. Annielsand and Jordanhill are too far away, especially with kids and Glasgow weather if the cold/rain bothers you. Fine by bike though. Both my girlfriend and I work at the University (although I'm at the Garscube site) and my daughter is at school in the West End. If we were living in any of the areas in that first list we'd basically never need to use the car, that's a massive plus for me.
School catchment areas matter a lot too if that's a consideration you need to make. If so Hillhead and Hyndland in the West End and Shawlands Academy on the south side seem to be the catchments to look at for secondary schools. Secondary ones are much bigger than primary ones.
Lots of turn over on 2 beds at the moment, I'm currently looking for a 3 bed. Should easily get something for £260k.
In terms of most for your money, if you're looking at 2 bedrooms then you get a bit more on the Southside. 3 beds and the prices in the West End seem very similar to the Southside.
