  • Didn't think I needed a thread for this but a 'quick' bit of tinkering this morning has left me with a frame I can't currently use.

Some of you might remember this frame from when @countryboj had it like this:

I was looking for a track frame with decent steel tubes and a 1 inch threaded HT a few months ago, which perfectly coincided with countryboj putting this up for sale. Columbus Max and wishbone meant it would match my Rychtarski nicely so I begged borrowed and stole to scrape funds together to get it off him. Should also mention that he was nice enough to let me pay half up front and half later, which was massively appreciated.

I chucked my parts bin at it and ended up with this:

Its a lovely ride, a little harsh but that could be down to tyre pressure more than anything.

Problem is, this morning I managed to round out the seatpost expander when swapping posts around. This frame uses a very rare clamp type that I've yet to see on any other frame, and may well be a one-off for this frame. It has a hole drilled in the wishbone behind the post like so:

This gives access to the post, allowing an expanding wedge to fit that puts pressure on the rear of the post, holding it in place. This might not be the strongest way of holding a post in place but I don't weigh anywhere near enough for it to be an issue.

The expander pieces look like this (ignore the dirty fingers)

First two photos are of the right hand piece that contains the threads, this is what has stripped. The third photo is of the left hand piece, which is bored to allow the bolt to sit flush and doesn't contain threads. Admittedly I wasn't using a torque wrench but the force I was using didn't feel excessive.

Has anyone got any ideas on how I could fix this? Helicoil? Resort to getting a new piece machined? The design is fairly simple so shouldn't cost too much. If anyone has seen this design before are there spares available anywhere?

From what I can gather online the shop doesn't seem to exist anymore, or has been taken over by people that wanted the brand and have nothing to do with the frame building side. I vaguely remember @Dick knowing something about this frame? Any help would be much appreciated, I'd really like to get this back on the road.

  • there seems to be enough material to cut a new thread the next size up and change the bolt. Just an idea. Or.. cant you just get a hex nut in there(the recessed part) and use a longer threaded bolt. Either way it doesnt seem like something some careful consideration of drill use or a tap couldnt sort.

Bottom of this page, looks like what you are looking for
    Art.2280 under the Saba heading

  • Harry Hall Cycles is still alive and kicking as far as I'm aware - I worked there for almost 3 years while I was back up north at uni. However, their days of frame building are long gone and I'm pretty certain they wouldn't know where to start with this.

I'd say your options above are the best - rethread with a larger diameter bolt or get a new one machined!

  • Similar concept but very different shape. Thanks anyway

  • Wow that does look like it, good spot! Now to try and work out how to contact them

  • Ah yeah I did think you worked there but wasn't sure. Were they still building when you were there? Do you know who this frame was built for? I may also take this to a local framebuilder to check out the paint flake around the seattube lug. It doesn't creak but looks like it could turn into a crack after time

May also become an excuse to repaint this, theres a few chips and the paint is fairly tired

  • Email peter on sales@ceeway.com, he's a really nice guy and will sort you out

  • Yep email sent to that address. Although now looking at the piece I'm worried its a braze-on seattube lug, like this one

However looking at this thread it could be a similar design, only infront of the post:

  • It is the same shape on my LOOK however it has a carbon seatpost, and I'm not so sure about the diameter of yours.

  • Oh right, looking at the eBay listing I thought it looked different to how I imagined it. That type looks more secure than mine, although is it made of plastic? Any chance you could measure it for me please? Also are you sure yours is the same as in the listing? (I know nothing of old look frames) I'm guessing 25mm refers to the diameter?
    Thanks!

  • The rabbit hole goes deeper. I found @HighburyT 's KG96 project thread where @specialegg ( @dk ?) recommended him JeJames Cycles who sell the part for his frame:

JeJames has what I think is the part, although only shows half in this incredibly tiny photo:

Does anyone know if this comes with both pieces I need? I will also email JeJames. Link to it is here

  • It's not made in plastic I would say alloy. It's about 14mm for the diameter, which fits perfectly into the 'hole'.
Mine is definitely the same as the ebay listing, 25mm refers to the diameter of the seatpost.
What's the diameter of your seatpost?

I don't know about JeJames Cycles but it makes no sense to sell only one part of the clamp.
Here is an other listing on ebay, showing also only half the clamp:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Look-Seatpost-Clamp-Bolt-for-25-mm-Seatposts-Fits-Kg451-361-381-481/172409847698?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D44293%26meid%3D862854e191bd47e699caef70ac2eb72c%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D152365963866

    Hope it helps.

  • My seatpost diameter is 27.2, which should be fine. The difference in radius of the cutout would be so marginal that it wouldnt make a difference, and would still be better than the system I have at the moment. It does make me wonder why Harry Hall used this strange design if a working look version was readily available

Thanks for your measurement. I'll go measure mine quickly. Any chance you could measure roughly the length of the expander? Thanks

  • Just measured the diamter of mine. Came up to 16mm di and 20mm length with the two pieces pressed together.

This means it is a friction fit to the bore in the seatube, but it doesnt look like Looks are? Is there anyone based in SW with an old look that I could take a quick look at please?

  • Why not just get something custom made? or drill out the stripped threads and use a through bolt with a bolt on the outside?

  • I did think that too, you could make it look okay with a stainless socket screw, nyloc nut (if you're feeling OCD) and washer. Change out of a quid.

  • Cost mainly. If the Look type will fit this frame its £8 delivered (and I could have it by the end of the week) versus spending what could amount to a LOT of money on a one off machined part that could take weeks to be made.

As much as using a nut and bolt with the stripped piece would work, I want this be my nice bike and it will always bother me that its a messy looking bodge. If the Look clamp doesnt work out I could use it as a stop gap while I make myself a proper one

  • A short helicoil will probably get you out of trouble. You can buy cheap helicoil kits on eBay £25-ish), but it'll probably be a bit cheaper if you can find a replacement part.

  • Could you use a standard seatpost binder bolt in the original expanding wedge? would be neater that a standard nut and bolt.

    something like this
    https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/seat-posts/etc-allen-key-seat-bolt-binder-27mm/

  • spending what could amount to a LOT of money on a one off machined part that could take weeks to be made.

Dude, its not that complicated. You can make this with a drill press or hell hand tools if you are at all handy

  • Hey @Turkish can I borrow your drill press?

  • I thought you meant have a machine shop make me one, which is very pricey for one off parts. Admittedly I could make myself one but I'm a bit time poor at the moment and I don't have access to a lathe or drill press anymore.

It will always be an option but if the Look one will work I'd rather use that. By the time I've bought myself a drill tap and a 16mm piece of alu the price will probably be more than ordering the piece from JeJames. Speaking of which, I may just order it and return it if it doesnt work

  • Potentially something like that yes. I'd want to countersink my existing piece so it sits flush though. I'm also more interested in a look type design than my one that broke, it seems like it will be safer because the pressure on the seatpost is more spread out, rather than mine which could create stress risers(?). I also wouldnt feel comfortable using a carbon post with the current design
