The Cross Check is slightly lighter and the fork/chainstay aren't as stiff perhaps (disc need the fork arm to be stronger).
-
• #503
Am tempted by the disc version but I've got a non-disc dynamo wheelset which I was gonna use.
Might be looking at the second hand market. Any other bikes/brands I should consider as close substitutes for Surly?

At this year's Gravel Dash, nobody volunteered for Charlie's "I regret choosing drop bars" prize. I made a counter offer of "My bars are too narrow and lack radness", and received some very nice Salsa Rustler 3 lowrise bars, 750mm wide with 11 degrees sweep. These replaced my 580mm EA70 flat bar last night. Wrist ache and tingly fingers no more.

Yep. 1x11 Di2:
- 6870-GS rear mech (max 32t)
- Shimano 11sp 11-40T cassette (because XT M8000 hubs. 11sp mtb hubs use a 10sp-width freehub, 1.85mm too narrow for road 11sp cassettes)
- BTR-2 internal battery in an SM-BTC-1 case (includes a 6-port "junction B")
- SW-R600 climbing/pave shifter, sits on the brake lever clamp with one ziptie each side
(R600 is a proper shifter. R610 sprinter "shifter" are just satellite buttons that feed into the brifter's chip. - SM-EW90-B 5-port junction, so eventually I can fit drops with Di2 Hydro-brifters.
Need to buy the sticky sheathing to get the wires mounted securely.

Can I ask, why did you pick a Surly to adorn with all that electronic goodness? It's totally rad and I love it, but Surly usually rock the utilitarian vibe and I suppose if I was using Di2 I'd be wanting to put it on a more 'high-end' frame. Just curious really!

@Stroller the picture is a pimped steamroller, there some Di2 Pacers out there.
Some people just want a modern steel frame, and the Pacer has filled that niche at a moderate price.

He's talking about this:

No it was a general notion that pimping a "Surly" is unusual, the more you dig around the more you will find across the surly range. From road to touring to adventure to Fat, i just highlighted 2 of the range that are common.
That's how i read the question.

Di2 Alfine Krampus :) lashings of Chris King and i think a dynamo hub

Chris King headset on a Surly is clearly not considered pimped then!

I didn't buy the frame, I got DFL at the 2016 Dorset Gravel Dash 100 by stopping on the final descent fot almost 2 hours as one of the guys I was with washed out and broke his femur in 3 places.
I figured seeing as I didn't choose to buy it for a particular necessity, I'd slowly buy nice parts off eBay and discount sales to make a nice bike.
@853Superfly Note the M985 XTR hydraulic brakes. It's a Straggler with Conti RaceKing 2.0 tyres.

Hey, I fitted 4 perfectly good pencil bushings to stop those lowers wiggling and I still had at least one left at the bottom!
Nah you're right, plus its less likely to cause an issue if you warp a rim touring. For some reason though my Cross Check is just fractionally more lively than the stragglers I've tried. Could be half a dozen reasons for that tbf
