My lht shed its mudguards and both racks for the first time today.
120tpi knards were super fun round the parched Epping dust, stripped down it feels really nippy and chuckable now.
Swapping humpert bars for h bars at the mo but even with controltech extenders the grip area is too short(just) for my ergo grips and brake lever.
I want to use these bars on my ogre when it arrives so it's a bummer if I have to find a different solution. -

I have a lot of love for the 700c Knard 120 TPI. Raced cross on them last season - great for dry-ish conditions and super comfy.

@giofox88 - I saw upstream that you had nanos on your straggler. Were they the 700x41 variety?
I want to put some big, grippy tyres on mine to follow a MTB friend round some trails and they seem like they fall within my limited budget, but wasn't 100% sure they'd fit. -

I got the TCS version when it was on sale on PX, now it seems the Comp on Wiggle are the best price around.
These are grippy, but also quite fast rolling when needed.
They do fit fine, I reckon there is still few mm clearance each side on the chain stays. The only problem I had was with the braze on FD position, it was rubbing the side of the tyre when pulled on the big ring. Moved back the wheel, but this generated other issues. I only later realised that if you are riding MTB trails you'll never need your 50t (I won't).

Yeah it's the comp version on wiggle I was looking at. I'm currently running it 1x9 so won't have any issues with front mech.

Actually that's a good point about not needing 50t. I have 40t up front and a 11-32 in the rear. Knowing nothing about riding on anything other than road, does that sound like a useful gearing for razzing around the woods?

Sounds spot on. I run 1x10 42t with 11-32 with no problems.

For various boring reasons, I ended up shunning the nanos and going with contis, which I suspect are the lesser tyre of the two. Oh well.
Very much looking forward to getting this mother dirty. May even take the child seat bracket off...

Looking at the Surly Cross-check for some semi-off road touring. Not gonna be heavily packed but is this the bike for the job? What other bikes are similar? Genesis tour de fer?

Get a cross check, excellent frames, will last you ages, will carry a load and then let you thrash it round the woods when you've taken all your touring gear off.

No doubt the Cross Check is an amazing bikes.
But changing a brake disc is way easier than changing rim - especially if you plan on riding in the rain.
Actually it's fine now, had a good test ride doing the Cobblemonster on it, bike excel, great to ride.
gonna fit a silver Cane Creek SCR-5 levers to finish it off, the original levers work great but need a second levers for climbing the notorious South London hill.
