A38 North of Bristol

  • Planning a potential Brum - Weston Super Mare ride, and the Strava auto-route function is taking me on the A38 from Tewkesbury to Bristol for part of the journey.

I guess Strava is picking that route as it's part of LEJOG ? Anyone have experience of riding on the A38 ?

  • I did LEJOG last year and did Taunton to Tewkesbury.
I can't remember a great deal, which I guess means it wasn't very interesting.
I do remember one section being quite flat and fast.
Looking at Google maps seems to back up the boring aspect. Although going through Bristol is obviously nice.
Sorry, but I can't remember what the traffic was like. It would have been a week day so not as heavy as the weekend anyway.

  • It's not especially nice, part of it is used for a TT (u7b) and it's mostly pretty poor/slow surface. It's less hilly than going further east though...

  • I cycled from Birmingham to Bristol recently, took this route:
    http://brouter.de/brouter-web/#zoom=10&lat=51.8879&lon=-2.786&layer=OpenCycleMap%20(Thunderf.)&lonlats=-1.906128,52.44764|-2.162933,52.223593|-2.334595,51.805218|-2.551575,51.610768|-2.627792,51.510025|-2.594833,51.450156&nogos=&profile=trekking&alternativeidx=0&format=geojson

Was really nice, maybe a bit further than on the A38 but surely nicer. Also would recommend b-router for creating routes.

  • I would echo what danb has said. The road is pretty quiet as it was de-trunked quite a few years ago and sections of it are quite wide, but since it was passed back to the local councils the surface has deteriorated. It is Ok in a car, but I would imagine sections could be pretty unpleasant as it is that bloody horrible tarmac and coarse gravel type surface so adored by rural councils.

I like to look of wjrh's route, that would be my choice.

  • +1 for the above - part of it used to be my commute ( Gloucester - Worcester ). The 38 from Gloucester south is OK - quite a lot of painted cycle lane on the side but get off well before Bristol and just trundle down the west side.

  • Thanks all and especially @wjrh - that looks far more interesting than going down the A38. Was going to do it this weekend, but a mild cold and middling weather has postponed it
