Just carry it on in your hand luggage. The x-ray from those machines will not affect 400 ISO or slower films. You can ask them to hand check if you have faster films, or you could use one of those lead lined bags. I've never had a problem even with Portra 800.

The check-in luggage x-ray is more powerful though, and will probably wreck your film. Never tested this myself though.

thanks for the tips! I am hoping it will be bright (and warm) so wont be taking anything above 400.

Walk everywhere. Plenty of great vistas all over the place. Crossing the various bridges by foot is fun. Especially Williamsburg bridge.
Also, go to China town. It pisses on our poor excuse of a China town as it's a whole neighbourhood.
