  • Flying to NYC for a week next Friday. How do I carry film safely? Any 'must visits' photography wise?

  • Just carry it on in your hand luggage. The x-ray from those machines will not affect 400 ISO or slower films. You can ask them to hand check if you have faster films, or you could use one of those lead lined bags. I've never had a problem even with Portra 800.

The check-in luggage x-ray is more powerful though, and will probably wreck your film. Never tested this myself though.

  • Came back from NYC on Saturday and had wondered the exact same thing. My personal experience of flying with film is to make it as easy as possible for them... my go to is taking all of the films out of canisters and handing it to them in a clear sandwich style bag so they can see everything straight away. I found the best place for photos was under the Brooklyn bridge and Green-wood cemetery personally. From the same NYC rolls but scanned this one of Kew Gardens yesterday which I'd forgotten.
