Now to clean around the crown race on the steerer tube and think about headset.

Spotted this lot while looking for paint.
Never seen patterned Duct tape before, they had one with those mexican wrestlers skulls all over it.......I was tempted to tape all the things :)

Stay away from tapes :)
Place called Hobby Craft, big chain store.
I couldn't get all the patterns in shot, but several other bright funky ones, and carbon effect etc etc.
Only used to seeing silver or black. -

I wouldn't have bought this colour by choice, but it's growing on me.
Little highlights of colour added...... yep, might have to stop.
Will work with black parts which is handy as 50shades of black Dolan is giving most of it's bits over.Headset took a while but no need to rush. Wopped the seatpost in from Dolan too, for now.

From darkness into the light.
Rollins is born :)Setting a headset, the most important part of a bicycle frameset, or as Klein referred to them "A Fusealage "
A frame is a frame, a fork a fork, useless without the other, set in the headset and the frameset is born, like lying down the keel on ship, it's the spine that everything hangs from.
Now to look into outfitting Rollins for action.Needs,
brake cable stops/clips
BB (have one but it's very wide spindle)
bottle mounts, i think another set will be handy, either saddle/bar/tube clip on affair.
chainring, i reckon i will stick with 42t up front. Although may just get a new chainset, as current one is an 80's Suntour.
Pedals, current ones are clicky, bearings gone.
rack hardware, need to fit the rack somehow.
mud guard mounts, may keep the Dolan carbon fork for commuting, and use the Steel for fat tyre fun.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7MZwH24CI8

Apart from just using zipties, which i have done before on other bikes.
Anyone tried these M-part stick brake cable guides ? Any good.
I don't fancy the steel ones that bolt around the tube.

Been having a poke around.
Been shining a torch down tubes, from what i can see all tubes are actually coated inside, the online manual states "ED Coating"
This is a step up on my older Karate Monkey where i tend to do a healthy squirt of WD40/GT85 down the tubes after wet races, and of course remove seatpost, steelers need some loving.Rear dropouts are 120mm, and fork is 100.5mm ( been playing with calipers )
Top tube and seat tube and down tube 29mm, HT 37.3mmMy KM has 29mm top and seat tube and a lower ring reinforced 38.3mm headtube.
Seat and chainstays appear to be the same stock tube.
Just read the warning label on the seat tube :) Surlys are bad for your health nowdays. I will put this down to the frame saver treatment and USA laws.
Cage and rack/guard holes are fine (Dolan needed tapping through)
Paint is a bit thin in places with the odd flaw, possibly ED coating clumps. Sharp edges you can see the black ED coat through the paint.
It has been stated many times over the years " you don't buy a Surly for the paint job" although at the current retail price........ it could be a quirk of the actual colour used, although most won't really be interested.Seat tube was clear of any burring and post fit on 27.2mm is precise (bit slack but no issues on Dolan )
BB cups screwed in easily by hand (Dolan wasn't as smooth)
Quite excited about the first ride, in my head Rollins shares the bulk of the same tubes as Monk. So i am expecting a similar steel ride.
Most likely way off the mark but who cares.
Colour is still growing on me. Edscoble scored a Blue Roller, that's the one i would have had, or red as red ones are faster, but piss-yellow is ticking boxes :)http://surlybikes.com/bikes/steamroller/frame_highlights
Bet Kim would ride a Roller

I have a random box of stuff with rack clamps and things somewhere, must dig it out.
Chandra from NYC digs Rollers, if i challenged her to race i would lose, but winner buys beers :)

Been faffing around.
The old Monkey silver seat clamp swaps out with the new one.
The old chunky seat clamp is only 39g against the new ones 50g.Another often used quote with Surlys "not one for weight watchers"
Cue some heavy metal :)

Been rummaging around.
Found the rack bracket i got for Dolan.
Dolan scores maximum points for full rear rack mounts, i can drop the rack in under a minute and refit it in about 2 minutes. Rollins is going to be a faff with rack bracket on caliper bolt.Set up the old spare wheels, 6spd freewheel, new rim tape, dig out the old conti 35's i had already played with axle spacing and it fits Dolan and Rollins. A bit kinky but it's possible to fit gears to single speeders. If needs must.

Mock up.
Yes that's a geared wheel on a fixed :)
Drop bars won't make the cut, will most likely get bundled off with Dolan.
Orange brake outer works.
Imagine all black parts.
Best check bank balance and hit up SJS for parts :)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDTSUwIZdMk

More parts ordered, might even have them this week.
Maybe.
Maybe not.
UN55, cables, ferrules, crank bolts, cable ends, cable clips. Hanging fire on chain ring for now, might just get a new chainset later.

So after all this monologue interieur I'm quite intrigued what this will turn out to be.
On a side note, the orange outers are a very uhm... bold choice. But then I can't think of anything subtle to match yellow, besides black. Or maybe blue like the swedish flag...

Strange you mention Blue, i nearly bought a blue saddle pack, went with orange for the black-on-black Dolan.
Fella at the Muswell hill bike jumble had reels of cable, £1 a foot. Normal range of colour black/white/red/yellow/green/flo green, a superbe gash glittery purple and the Orange.
It's sort of close to the Ortleib.
