@Batt why not single sided SPD pedals like Shimano M324? Phil's got them, she wears trainers for commute and SPDs when we go touring. Can get her to talk em up to B if it'll help?

Another current project: I've had a very ratty Specialized hanging in the garage, since @Simba gave it to me a few years back. Pulled it down yesterday and had a closer look: Immensely shit paint, but 3 sets of bottle bosses and the geo seems ok, if a bit small. Started building it yesterday and plan to build it without spending anything.

definitely needs a silly rear wheel. Currently looking like the bike equivalent of a reversed mullet.

Just found out that DNP make a 10-speed screw-on freewheel. Could put one of those on my other trispoke or disc wheel. £40 though...

Possibly a bit sketchy? Vaguely remember hearing that 8 speed freewheels contributed to snapped axles as the cones were too close together for the overall OLND.

Yeah, fully aware of that, but I weigh in at a feathery 97kgs, so I'm not too worried ;)

Is that the original maxi sports fork? Imo needs a beefier fork to do the frame justice...

Is that this?
EDIT: obviously different, woops.

Forgot to mention actually we got her on a 1x for a while and that built her confidence with the gears - it's just the hills round here that mean she needs a triple. Maybe a galaxy with flat ish bars and a nice wide range 1x could be the ticket for your other half? Could always add a front mech in the future.
Sounds like my next current project...

I've got a few pairs of these and they are good pedals, but doesn't reduce the risk of spd fails.

My girlfriend has 4 bikes - all with front derailleurs, but she hasn't moved a single one of them ever.
Mind you it is really flat around here.
But I would recommend 1x drivetrains to anyone starting out. -

why not single sided SPD pedals like Shimano M324?
Because the double sided "Trail" style (e.g. PD-M545) work just as well with trainers and don't annoy you by always being the wrong way up when you try to clip in with your proper shoes.
Got the GT almost done last night. Just need to adjust the gears and put a useable tyre on the front. Still think it needs a silly rear wheel.
