Please tell me you haven't heard that in a business meeting...

'swimlane'
That project is being taken forward in a different swimlane.
-
• #1855
That's ok for me, because swimlane diagrams actually look like lanes in a swimming pool. If they didn't I'd protest.
-
• #1856
Yeah we have swimlanes on our jira board. It's a pass.
-
• #1857
Ditto, it's a thing.
-
• #1858
Sounds a bit American. Does it mean "stream of work"?
-
• #1859
Was not aware how deep set this way to explain something displayed diagramatically in a row had become. Isn't it just a "workstream" (buzzword from the 80's?)
-
• #1860
Does it mean "stream of work"?
Kind of. It's more about the diagram than the workstream.
Looky:
-
• #1861
But swimming lanes are isolated. Nothing gets passed between them.
I declare this buzzword unusable.

But swimming lanes are isolated. Nothing gets passed between them.
Except maybe water?
-
• #1863
Maybe.

You can swim under the ropes.
-
• #1866
No. That's forbidden.
-
• #1867
Only when you realise you're not good enough for the fast lane.
-
• #1868
in no way is 'swimlanes' acceptable
-
• #1869
Well, as per @Drakien, 'swimlane diagram' is one of those jargon terms I do reluctantly use, having accepted that 'cross functional process chart' is too unwieldy.
I wouldn't use 'swimlane' outside a diagram though. As per the example, it doesn't imply a stream of work, but the slice of a process which is carried out by one function/dept/team.

Can we agree though, that the analogy of a swimming pool/race doesn't work, outside the fact that it's something that occurs in thin stripes?
If the diagram is supposed to indicate how tasks are passed around between teams or how they cooperate, then you couldn't really pick a worse analogue than swimmers in separate lanes.
Yes correct I win the internet.
-
• #1871
Agree, it's a visual analogy only. Please do come up with a better term.
-
• #1872
Longdrop chart.
-
• #1873
... so is that an analogy to execution by hanging, rustic outdoor toilets, or mudguard-compatible brake calipers?
-
• #1874
Rustic outdoor toilets. A column of shit progressing down towards the bottom.
-
• #1875
It's just a flowchart with some embellishment. So I reckon "phlo-chart".
