You can have any colour as long as it's black, kinda grey and silver.

  • 3 / Three still the best idea for a cheap USA roaming SIM?

  • I'm with 3 and have never had really great data connections when I have gone back to the US. I would look at a PAYG with Verizon or T-Mobile if you can get it. USA has lots of empty spaces so coverage is key. I can ask family if you want me to get details for you.

  • I didn't think you could get SIMs there? I think @Spares said to just buy a 'disposable' phone when I get there.

I have a feeling someone was bagging Verizon's coverage somewhere but that's clearly pretty vague... hmm..

  • I've had decent coverage with 3 out there but you have to sometimes be prepared to disconnect from networks and connect to others manually. I find it will lock on to one and then that will get crap but you'll still be connected to it rather than a much faster network.

It also depends on the phone hardware. Some only have one or two of multiple bands working so although the coverage is good your phone won't connect as it doesn't have that radio band. This is a good site for checking that http://willmyphonework.net/

  • That says my Z3 Compact isn't good for 2G or 3G but ok for 4G on Verizon. Seems odd.

    Oh, but then says it's got 2g, 3g and 4g on T-Mobile.

Any others apart from those two I should consider?

    AT&T does 3g and 4g

  • I have a wheel, but don't have a tyre to fit. Have tried a couple of 622x23 tyres but they are ever so slightly too big. Sheldon brown doesn't list any wheels that are slightly smaller than 622. This wheel is from an old motobecane I bought in France a few years ago. Says Veulta Classic but Google doesn't help. I've measured the circumference with string as 194cm, which equates to 618 diameter, which allowing for string slack and bodged measuring is basically 622 right. What tyre do I need..?

  • I've struggled to connect to 4g when abroad with 3, even though the phone has at least one of the necessary bands. Not sure why and switching to 3g works.

  • Doesn't it fall back to 3G automatically?
I don't care so much about speed, I'll be riding most of the time, wide range connectivity is more important to me.

  • Is there no clue given on that rim sticker?

  • No, I assume as it's looking for a 4G network to connect to and never finds one so it doesn't look for a 3G one or something. Manually changing the preferred network to 3G lets it find a 3G network and works fine. Don't know whether it's the phone or 3 (I've had it in more than one country). 4G/3G work fine in the UK with no manual switching.

  • Hmm, although @Aroogah's link does seem to suggest a UK roaming SIM is better

"If you’re roaming on a UK-based SIM card, you can benefit from the coverage on both AT&T and T-Mobile USA (your smartphone will automatically choose the network offering the strongest coverage)."

  • No, I've never bothered with buying extra sims. I generally want to keep my number when I'm travelling.

  • I won't be answering calls so that's not relevant to me. But if it's cheaper with better coverage to keep the UK number then that makes sense to me. I'll probably get a PAYG sim this time with bolt-on data rather than the Three contract I got for TCR.

Thinking about these rims for my camapagnolo pista hubs. However worried about the front breaking surface coming off and turning silver. What would limit it other than not using front brake. Also are there any nice 700c 36hole rims in silver or grey /black that would be good for this project. Does anybody have anything or know of anything being sold?

  • Try a 590mm (26 x 1 3/8) tire on there, or if you can find one, a 597mm.

  • Whenever my sister visits here (Canada) she and b-in-law get payg sims; I would think costs of using your own would be huge.

  • Unfortunately, no.

  • Has anyone had Italian traffic fines before?

Work up to a signed-for letter informing me I had a traffic violation.

There is a reduced rate if you pay

within 5 days of the notification date of this deed

...the covering pink post slip has a date of 9/05/17 so I think I may just be in time.

    Any tips or other experience?

    Cheers.

    Thanks.

I did pay it, but was a bit prang about it being a scam. I'm also not 100% whether the discounted period was still valid.

  • ^^ Have you tried other 622 tires?

  • A couple of different ones, yes. They almost seem ok, but with both when under pressure (only about 30psi) the tyre pops off.

@withered_preacher The 597mm is possibly worth a go, if I can find a cheap one. According to Sheldon, there's also 599 and 609 sizes.

  • Got a pic of the bead hook?
