I'm with 3 and have never had really great data connections when I have gone back to the US. I would look at a PAYG with Verizon or T-Mobile if you can get it. USA has lots of empty spaces so coverage is key. I can ask family if you want me to get details for you.

My only experience recently has been in Texas, but it is good there
