  • It very much depends on where you are having it. If you are having it on your legs then I'd stay off day racing for longer. You'd also have to factor in the sun now the weather is brighter. Day 1 hurts but day 2 hurts even more than you'd get a few days of itch that you wish you never had the tattoo done... Then a week later, you start thinking about the next one...

Best person to speak to is your artist, and have you actually got an appropriate booked? Generally speaking, if an artist has no waiting list at all, alarm bells should be ringing unless of course they are doing a walk in special or sth...

  • Upper arm, but it's not small. I hoped getting it done on a Monday would be enough time before the following Saturday. Out of a racing period I'm training nearly every day so figured this might be the best time to do it! It'll be covered up when out on the bike and off the bike.

Not sure about availability yet, it's someone at Parliament who I've heard some good things about. The location is also really convenient. Bit worried now if they have loads of slots free...!

  • I've trawled through the thread a fair old bit but can anyone recommend an artist oooop north, Manchester / Leeds / Liverpool way? Tattoo will be blackwork / woodcut style. Hit me up with some links if anyone springs to mind.

  • Some artists only book themselves up to about a month or so, like Dani at Seven Doors, last i checked you can pretty much see him for a consultation the same week and then get the tattoo done within a few weeks but he chooses not to take bookings too far ahead so you need to get there at the right time, so to speak. The artists I have work done by tend to have a 3 months or so waiting list. So if you rock up this weekend and they have a slot, especially a long session available, then I'd like to know why. Unless the is actually a cancellation, which does happen...

Also if you want something good done, don't expect to rock up and expect consultation and tattoo to be done the same time, you are paying for their creativity and skills.

    Good luck.

  • Also sweat and healing tattoo don't get on very well either.

  • 'If an artist has no waiting list at all, alarm bells should be ringing unless of course they are doing a walk in special or sth...'

    Sorry, this is utter bullshit.

There are plenty of great artists out there without waiting lists

  • You are entitled to your opinions as I am to mine, and you'd bothered to look at my other reply, you would probably realise that I have also added some artists choose not to have a waiting list system.

    Good day to you sir.

  • Dan Morris springs to mind for that black/woodcut style:

  • I don't really have an opinion on whether or not someone without a long waiting list is likely to be as good as someone with one, I've had tattoos that I've waited months for an appointment for and tattoos that I've booked a couple of days beforehand and have been happy with both. If it's someone at Parliament they're bound to be very good anyway!

  • This whole forever waiting periods thing that allot artists do now is more about look at me I'm booked for a year than anything else.

  • a lot of artists should rethink about that as they will loose flexibility and spontaneous things in their life.

had tbe hollow of the knee tattooed 2 weeks ago, most badass pain until now (during the session and a lot of days afterwards)

  • Both knees done yesterday in one sitting. Took about 4ish hours maybe abit more, then rode 1.5miles home so not too bad. The actual knee cap it self wasn't bad at all but I found the inner top part of the knee cap very gnarly (the bit you could grab your knee cap by)if that makes sense. Puffy knees today but nothing too bad. Pretty simple traditional designs so that helps. Will post a pic soon

  • Super shit photo but you get the gist of it

  • quite like those

  • Thinking of getting some more line art this week, still trying to decide on what.

  • Cheers. I'm quite fond of then too. Looking after them is a pain though Aha
Suffering from The world's most itchy knees at the moment. Any recommendations to help apart from htfu lol

  • Have just given myself my first hand poke.

Looks not too bad just now but will be letting it settle for a day or two before I decide if I post any photos of it.

  • What's the pain like compared to machined tattoos? Machined tattoo? You know what I mean!

  • Less. I think.

It's hard to say really, there was very little pain but then again, I used a 5rl to do it, last tattoo I had done was lined with something like a 13rl so that's a whole lot more holes so not really comparable.

I suppose it started to hurt a little bit when I was going over bits filling in gaps but I really didn't do too much of this as I know that I can touch it up anytime so there was no incentive to hurt myself, quite different to a machine tattoo where the artist will be ensuring it's well lined with zero gaps.

I've no idea if I've gone deep enough or not. I think the deeper you go the more you bleed and I didn't bleed at all so I've maybe been to light handed but it looked like I was poking with about the same force as the vids I've watched on youtube etc. and it does look now like the ink is properly in my skin.

I guess time will tell as to how it lasts.

What I've done is nothing like a machine tattoo, I didn't want it to be and like I said, I can touch it up/add to it anytime so this was really a first pass to see how it went. I'm pretty certain I'll be going over this to thicken out the lines pretty soon.

This is on the front of my thigh and is about 2-2 1/2" high.

If you're wondering, it's the seal of Marbas(or the start thereof, should really be within a circle and with MARBAS written around it) who was the demon that taught the mechanical arts according to the Goetia.

  • a tattoo on the sole of the foot, especially up in the arch- will this really fade significantly more than a tattoo anywhere else?

  • Yes, skin on the bottoms of feet and palms don't hold the ink as well (I'm sure there's some technical reason but I don't know) so fade faster.

  • Thick skin.

  • Short answer yes, it will not last. Long answer yes, may be able to get it to stay to some degree if the artist knows specifically how to tattoo palms and soles but you will not enjoy the experience.

  • If you are bleeding from a hand poked tattoo you are going way too deep, with hand poke you really have to just have a feel/ear for it to get the depth right.

  • Sounds good. When I was doing it it certainly felt just sort of 'right'.

Today's the first day I haven't bepanthened it, it's a bit itchy but reckon that's more to do with the hair growing back in and it looks (to my untrained eye) like the ink's spread out a bit, filled the gaps between my pokes a little and like it's happy staying where it is.

Gonna try some lettering next I think, fingers crossed it's not totally illegible!
