I did that with a pair of trainers by hacking up some really cheap cycling shoes (a pair with knackered uppers would work fine) and sticking the sole with the cleat holes into some trainers https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/134357/?offset=950#comment10150444

On the topic of converting, is there a three-bolt solution like the Retrofitz for mtb cleats?
Preferably aliexpress, preferably dirt cheap? Or is it wedge those metal adapters into the insole and hope it's not excruciating to pedal on?
