    Just stick with 700c, means less faffing, wider tyre choice, cheaper, simpler etc etc etc. It might not please the 650b purebreds on this site, but it'll carry your girlfriend from A to B.

    It's the only reason I like bicycles.

    Srsly though .. measure the distance between canti posts before you settle on brakes.

    I've just been around the houses this week as I stupidly assumed the GF Bike (a Dawes mixte) would work with any canti / v-brake I wanted. Turns out the frame is older than I thought and uses obsolete narrower spacing and no modern canti or V-brake I tried had a wide enough space between pads to allow proper set up.

    Solution was getting some NOS Tektros which uses post mount pads instead of threaded.

    PS I've got her old Shimano's if you run into difficulty. Not great but cheap and better than no brakes.
