Slack Team

  • Hey guys, is any of you using Slack for communication?

I use it day in, day out at my work. It can be pretty buzzy and overwhelming sometimes, but when channels are organised nicely, it is a pretty powerful and easy to use tool

I've booked the LFGSS slack team at https://lfgss.slack.com and happy to give it to the admins if they fancy. I still haven't created any channels, just wondering whether this could be something we can try out for a while, see if it works.

    Here's the invite

  • @Velocio as an fyi

  • Interested in having a go, if only so I can say I've used it in interviews

  • More like SpamDev...

  • I used to use Slack at work, so I'm curious to see how it would work in this kind of application...

  • Thanks, already on there.

  • Someone instigated it at my work; it's a massive time wasting exercise as far as I can see. Does mean you can have some fun chats slagging people off while they're still in the process of doing/saying something stupid but I've found it extremely detrimental to workflow.

Not sure how it would work as a social thing; isn't it just another forum/chat-room type thing?

  • Rules for Slack or Hip Chat at work:

    1. Don't say anything you wouldn't say to someone's face
    2. See #1

Basically workplaces have retention policies and everything, including private messages, is visible to the workplace. And because staff may leave and info related to projects will be in Slack, it is all searchable and will be searched.

Keep the bitching on WhatsApp and be professional on workplace Slack and HipChat.

  • Our current boss told us that although Slack looks chat like its much more easier for an employer to go through conversations than email, she was speaking from experience .. since then I only slag off people on WhatsApp.

The interface and the nature of the app are quite disconnected IMO.

  • Hmm, that line has already been crossed :-/ I'll be careful from now on! I assumed DM's on slack were essentially the same as DM's on things like this/forums & so not likely to attract attention. Thanks @Velocio & @amey

  • Definitely not the case.

DMs are visible and have a long retention policy.

    STFU, and go to WhatsApp.

  • Interesting. I've read some of what you're talking about now.

It obv wasn't HR requiring or sackable bitching but will leave it for the pub from now on!

  • I don't like Slack's information handling policies. My company hosts a Mattermost instance instead which is open source and the data remains our property, unlike Slack.

  • We use a self-hosted HipChat for much the same reason. Retention policies and access still apply though.

    Non-work and HR'able stuff >>>>> WhatsApp
