• So I managed to pick up what I believe is a 1970s Raleigh Clubman locally. Seemed really original and complete on the advert, and the seller confirmed it had been in a shed most of its life. My size, 531, suntour + sugino mixed groupset, completely unworn but very original 27inch gum wall tyres.
Once my exams are over I plan to restore it but I have some thoughts/ questions for those interested. Once the pictures are added these will become more clear but for now:

    1) How would you go about cleaning the frame up? degrease and a polish probably won't do because there is some surface rust. If I could match the paint I could tape up the decals and rub/spray the frame followed by a clear lacquer.
    2) Can I simply mount the downtube shifters on the stem and does some can of shim exist for this? I've seen it done a lot and it's more practical / ergonomic.
    3) This is a minor point but I am a fan of details, and the wearing off of the suntour and sugino decals bugs me, though there aren't replacements on eBay. Any thoughts?

    1. Does anyone have some swept back flat bars for sale please and a longer quill stem please?

    Thanks :)

  • If you're planning on changing the bars on this to swept back bars, your best bet would be to put the shifter on the bar itself.
Obviously it depends how original you want to keep it, but a flat bar shifter would look better than a stem mounted shifter in my opinion

  • Have you got a link to some front + rear shifters that would work please? Thanks, I agree. Not 100% sure on the bars yet, it depends what comes up

  • dia compe thumb shifters?

    they look like this mounted:

bars you are looking for are porteurs

these are velo orange. they also do thumb shifters so you can get everything from them if you like it. you'll need some kind of cable guide for the downtube if i'm not mistaken

  • Hmm... they look a bit more like North Road/Moustache bars to me. I second not putting shifters on the stem. That always looks horrible to me. Bar end shifters could be another option.

I've got a 10cm quill stem for sale here

One additional thought. Even if those tyres are unworn, you might want to replace them, just for safety's sake, if they've been sat in a shed for decades.

  • Few bits from @MattG87 arrived today. Awesome guy

  • I'm not convinced those Sugino cranks sure are original, but the rest seems to be and I can confirm the Suntour is.

I wouldn't worry too much about keeping it original as it's not in that great condition. You could touch up the worst of the paint if you do want to keep the original paintwork. A lot of the surface rust on the parts may well come off with a ball of foil dipped in coke or water/Brasso/Autosol.

My other half had a mid-80s Clubman that was totally original, but he rode it into the ground and now it's totally not. But better that than not riding it!

  • Yeah they may be an upgrade; not complaining though! Yeah I need to sort out the paint really. Plan is to touch up what I can and protect it with a clear lacquer, being as careful as I can to protect the decals
