I often see pics of very well thought out expensive touring rigs like that, in obviously shitty muddy environments. But why no mudguards??

Couldn't agree more - especially if bikepacking. Surely you don't want to be crawling into your sleeping bag/bivvy soaking wet and covered in grit and mud?
