• Actually serious q yes. Need to do a 3.5hr drive each way every other week for work. Don't want to spend 7 hours in agony.

Is the Fabia better than a golf?

    It's cheaper.

I know it's a dull cliché but Golf's seem hard to beat. After spending a bit of time driving Golf* in London, UK roads, and down France it's hard to see what else you'd want from a practical pov - comfortable and spacious**.

I've only been driven in Fabias and they feel just like the cheaper / older golfs. However, they share the same engines and are meant to have good build quality. That said you can get an Octavia with pretty much all the same engines.

Minicab's seem to like Skodas which counts as a tick in my book.

If the driving route you're likely to do it a known quantity I'd do some research as to the real world mpg for that route.

  • Fabia is the same platform as the polo and Ibiza, while golf and Octavia share the same platform.

I now have a fabia estate, but on longer runs the gear ratios and road noise on the motorway are compromised compared to an equivalent 1.6 TDI golf.

Next time I buy I'll probably get a petrol Golf with a 6sp
