  • Also a fan of the silver

  • 39/16 is a nice commuting gear. Also yes to silver, looks classy

  • Finally got around to finishing this up and testing it.

Switched the Velo Orange post for a Thomson
Quick shakedown ride revealed a couple of issues, firstly the spyres were set up terribly and the clement xplor don't like leaves! I found these out simultaneously when I understeered through a bush!!

Sanding the brake pads and some fine tuning of the brakes solved one problem, and dropping the pressures in the tyres seems to have helped.

Got a good ride in this morning in various conditions!

Bit of ice in the mix

    And some mud!

Icy chopped up mud and bumps didn't agree with the wald!

Overall love it, great to be back on a nature boy and the 49 is much more comfortable then my old 52.

Now I need to sort the saddle angle, ditch the Keo's for a more off road friendly pedal and build up some 650s for summer!

Any recommendations for decent, light rims? preferably with minimal logos or removable ones?

  • Stunning bike/build!

Let me know if you ever decide to sell! ;)

  • What happened to the wald? Bolts vibrated loose or snapped something?

  • @metriod Thanks, think this one will be kept for a while though!

@edmundro I guess the bolt work its way loose! never found it though so could have snapped the bolt, no damage to the the basket itself though so easily fixed! manage to cable tie out the way to finish the ride.

  • Fair enough, the hardware included with Walds is a bit cheap and cheerful for my taste. I replaced everything on our ones with nylocks and allen bolts avec loctite for peace of mind.
Lovely build, glad you managed to bodge it to get home.

  • Sweet! Always use som bond lock/loctite rack & mudguard bolts. Alpkit sell a 200 gbp 650b road 'plus' wheelset

  • Nice bike! I wouldn't go 650b if I was you.. makes it look like a kids bike in my opinion, but you could go for the HED Belgium 650b rims

  • Thanks guys

@edmundro @Heldring Yes loctite did cross my mind when I was putting it on but stupidly skipped it. Lesson learnt!

@Jaap Just something I've wanted to try for a while and this frame should take them. Keeps my mind focused on this build for a few months rather then convincing myself another bike is needed! Plus I will keep 700s incase it doesn't work out.

  • Have you built up the 650b's yet?

  • Not yet unfortunately, have just built up some new wheels for the mountain bike though which means i have a spare set of 650 rims! however they a 27mm internal so possibly far too wide!

I am in the process of bodging 10 gears on the back for a few rides I want to do so maybe I should go full frankenbike with the dodgy wheels aswell! Ha!

Blackburn cages suck managed to snap one and the other slackens mid ride! Best place to find King cages in the uk? or any other sturdy cage?

  • How pretty do you want em? Lezyne flow are indestructible and hold bottles with a death grip.

  • @Yemble Think pretty has gone out the window, got a few big off road rides planned and the blackburns are useless! Ill have a look at the lezyne's thanks.

Some pics of the ghetto gears for anyone interested:
    ps excuse the mess!

Srampagano Drivetrain! Wrong in so many ways... yet seems to work!
10speed Sram Gx on XT cassette.

  • @rogan your current 10 sp sram levers will work with this mech FYI

  • No worries, this is the one I can vouch for FWIW.

  • Oh this is rad. My nature boys jones bars tho

  • What skewer are you running? Does it need to be specific for the adapter?

  • @rogan Just a random Shimano one I had lying about the mech hanger is for an Ns dirt jump bike, I started with a Dmr chain tug style one but it wasn't threaded right!
I might opt for the problem solvers tug style one or attack the current with a dremel eventually as this current set up doesn't quite allow me to get into the biggest ring.
However my current thinking is if I need 36-39 somethings not right haha!

  • Yeah i dont underatand what skewer i need for the problem solvers one, obviously would be moving to a cassette body hub, but it almost looks like the hanger takes a track axel?!

  • yeah same as the one i'm running, looks like it's designed for a 10mm bolt up axle but its got anti turn things built in which overlap the axle on my hub. may switch the skewers for an allen one but so far its holding ok.

  • Hmm... might grab one of those for piece of mind!

I have been trying my hardest to get the wheel to slip in current set up: bumping curbs, skids and jumps! all the technical tests and so far so good.

  • Few updates!

Ditched the GX shifter and put rival shifters on, first time using double tap not a huge fan, even less so when this happened on its first decent off road ride!

GX will go back on unless I find spares for the rival.
Excuse the tape, didn't seem to like be taken off and put back on.

A few flats gave me opportunity to take some bad photos! Luckily my bike held in an easier gear.

Even a few mechanicals can't spoil a ride like this though :)

Edit: only just noticed how blurry that photo is, apologies!

  • I really need to get on this
