I'm planning on replacing the hard-drive in my MacBook Pro (as I need more space). I'm not a Mac Head so would appreciate a check of my plans to make sure I don't screw it up.
I run both OS X Yosemite and Windows 10 (via BootCamp), and want to keep that setup, while adding a new ExFAT partition (for data generally, and specifically for sharing between the two different O/Ss).
I'm intending to re-install OS X from scratch, and clone (rather that re-install) Windows.
So my rough plans are:
- Back up everything (data, settings, licence keys, etc.)
- Clone Windows 10 image (e.g. with Win Clone)
- Probably also clone OS X image just for safety's sake (e.g. with Carbon Copy Clone)
- Fit new hard-drive
- Install OS X
- Run BootCamp
- Restore Windows 10 image (e.g. like this)
- Add a new partition (for the shared data)
- Fiddle about with everything to finish it off
Does that sound about right?
- Back up everything (data, settings, licence keys, etc.)

Nah that's what I'd been doing in the last few months, I use my Samsung tablet a lot in class and for going to places but I just cannot get on with it, the auto spell check for instance, it's a joke. And the ratio is funny making a lot of video viewing weird... I think now is as good as ever, or as bad depends on how you look at it. I don't think I will ever need a iPad Pro, not until it can actually be like a proper computer anyway, so in light of Apple has just brought out an iPad, I think the wait for a another normal reasonably priced iPad is long...
And yes, 128gb on a mini is crazy, like I said, 64gb is the happy middle ground which Apple seems to think otherwise...
Think I am just gonna go 32gb since most things are on iCloud / dropbox (I have crazy amount of free storage) anyway...

Fair does... sounds like you do need one asap... I have a feeling the fancy bezel less ones are going to be the Pros anyway, with the current iPads kicking about for entry level.... god knows their plans for the mini, my mum was looking to replace her OG one but the normal sized iPad is too big and the 128gb mini is bollocks when all she needs it for is sending me emails of houses I don't want to buy and the odd snap of the garden.

I have a 64gb wifi/3g Air 2 if anyone's interested. Always been in a case and haven't really used it in months.

how much?

Dunno :/ Argos is selling them for 580 new which makes me lol especially as the top of the line new ipad is 559.
Fleabay suggests between 280 - 380 but for that cost you could just get a new 32GB one. I never came close to filling 64gb up even with installing lots of heavy apps though it was for work so didn't install a music library or anything on it but just use spotify and Google Photos now so ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Also never used the cellular function so that was a waste of time in hindsight - just tethered it to my phone.
I'm no good at sales. Get a new 32gb wifi only.

Are we related?

Thanks for the honesty!
Just looked at my phone, excluding the photos and videos total usage for me is just under 10gb, I doubt I'd use the iPad as a camera of any kind... 32gb it is then!

Hi
Hopefully this is the right place for my query, if not, please direct me.
I have an iPhone 7. We are heading on holidays and I want to bring my old iPhone 5 with me in case the 7 breaks etc. I have a pay as you go SIM for the 5.
I have reset the 5 completely. Do I need to create a new Apple ID to use the 5?
Thanks,
Richard

You can sign in with the same Apple ID on multiple devices

Thanks. Is there any issue with iTunes or the App Store when using them on two devices?

Also never used the cellular function so that was a waste of time in hindsight - just tethered it to my phone.
I had an original iPad mini and now have the smaller iPad pro - I used/use them both mainly via the cellular connection, as if I'm in the house I use the laptop, they're for use outside the home, or at least were for me.

I just don't like multiple sim cards - can't fathom the value of PAYG and don't want another monthly direct debit so I got one good contract (27gbp pcm for 24gb data) and whenever I'm remote I'll tether. But usually I was somewhere with WiFi i.e. a studio or a train.

I think I pay somewhere between ten and fifteen quid a month for a data SIM from Three, my mobile phone is provided by work and (as I work for an infosecurity company) I wanted to avoid having IT email me saying "you're on cycling forums a lot, aren't you? BTW you're insane for spending that much on an old car".

I need to restore my iPhone to a particular period of time last week to retrieve some info, how do I check if my phone has such backup? I can only see what the latest backup is and I am pretty sure there are 2 or 3 backups listed at any given time on iCloud, is there a way to check? Done the iCloud storage, done looking through iCloud.com etc. I know the only sure way to see the list is during the restoring process, but I don't want to wipe my phone if the backup I am after isn't there.

There is a folder in your user folder, where you'll see you iPhone back ups it keeps all of them as far as I can see. Search where are my iPhone back ups stored and you should find where they live. Can't remember how well they are labelled/organised but think they are by date, and if you check when they are last modified you should be able to find the one you want.
As long as you've backed up to your computer, rather than to the cloud.. -

Just wiped an old MacBook pro and I'm in utilities tryna reinstall mavericks (which is what it came with) at first It wouldn't let me progress the install, until I manually changed the time in terminal, then i got another unspecified error just after I sign in. No problems with my apple account.
Wtf?

How are people feeling about the Kaby Lake/16GB RAM prediction for the Macbook now? Still confident?
Thunderbolt 1 and 2 are fully compatible yes- they use the same cable. The difference is that Thunderbolt can carry a Thunderbolt signal, which is a signal PCI-Express (4 lines).
