    Yes, I'm in Colorado right now though, and the car isn't, and I'd rather they fixed everything so I can pick the car up when I'm back in the UK and know it all works.

    Based on my inability not to fix things I suspect I'd be better off getting a shitter and sending it straight to the Indy, asking for it back only once everything is perfect, rather than spending a lot more on a car that is meant to be perfect.

  • My RS6 is obviously suffering from the dreaded 50p oil seal leak which involves engine removal to replace. I'm not worried. I have a power washer and lots of detergent, so the oily patches on the driveway could be removed. Not that I will actually remove them, but I could if I wanted to, and so that means they're not really there. Potentially.

  • Definitely. Eats fuel like it's going out of fashion (20mpg at best, 15mpg if driven with enthusiasm) and epic repair and maintenance bills. New boots all round £1,200. Oh, and I got pulled over by a very nice policeman on a motorbike packing a laser speed gun on Sunday on the A14, so that's either a day off work or a £100 fine and 3 points. You should get one immediately.

    Also oil on the drive will stop it going rusty, which is good.

    I genuinely don't remember the last time I saw a marked motorway copper, I thought austerity got them all.

  • In other painful car news, I can't undo the motor plate bolts, so after removing everything else needed to pull the engine it looks like I'm going to have to tow the car somewhere with an air ratchet just to undo 4 sodding bolts.

    Going to have one last effort with more heat and a longer breaker bar but I suspect the dreaded green loctite.

    Even the 12v clarke jobs removed stuff just takes time. Let it rattle as you would a windy.

  • I probably haven't enough juice in my garage to run a decent compressor alas. Access is an issue too - needs a right angle windy.

    Those BIG electric rattlers are beasts. Wouldn't work on this with the access issue but they pop off rusty lug nuts like it ain't no thang...I borrowed a big makita one for a bit and it was great. Kill batteries though and they're pricey.

  • As someone who has never spent that much on all of the cars I've owned put together and who's views are tainted by selling cars for the early part of my working life, my opinion on your options are twofold:

    • Stop trying to make it perfect, do the bare minimum in paint and non critical repairs, use it, enjoy it and then upgrade to a 997 or even a 991 in a couple of years.

    -Spend all the money, get it to exactly the standard you want it, make it the best 996 Cab in the UK (hell even the world). Ignore the expense but never ever think about selling it. Think of it as a car to last until your 7o's that you'll take to Porsche Club GB events like old boys do with mint Targas and 912's now.

    I'm guessing you've probably already come to the same conclusions though.

  • Which means don't spend another penny on it as it will likely be a bitch to import into CA and 996s are cheap and rust free here anyways. (I'm sure whatever rust bonus will be cancelled out by sun cooked paint and rubber parts but nevertheless...it's only emissions that matter anyway)

    Enjoy it man - at least nail a good European tour with some top down, south of France time...
