  • Or, £6,000+VAT for a complete, doors off/glass out re-spray

What was the initial purchase price again?

  • Far, far in the past now. I just had the projected invoice for the current service/MOT, at £2,500.

I'm just going to go and sit in the corner and cry for a while.

  • It would have been cheaper to have bought a 991, new, than it has been to buy a 996 second hand.

Look on my experience as cautionary tale.

  • Noted. I've been idly looking at s2 exiges for lols if I can sort some garage space, but the money could obvs solve many many other problems if directed elsewhere.

  • What on earth?! Didn't you just have all the running gear/etc checked and sorted?

  • Remember the headlight washer?

    That's £250, per side.

  • If it helps, I just got a 991 well over £100k with the builder.

  • If it's less than £2,000/month on finance then it's cheaper than my 996

  • £2k/month isn't putting you under sufficient financial stress.

Have you considered owning a boat or a helicopter?

  • I've settled upon just burning money in my waste paper basket.

    Here's the list from Precision:

    1. Wheel wobble at 65mph £40.00 to balance the front wheels.
2.Slow speed fan on n/s not working, new resistor. £213.82
      3.Only 1 horn working . £121.45
    2. Non Porsche wiper blades. £34.50 Clear the screen ok.
    3. Head light washer jet leaking at o/s £182.88 You may want to replace the n/s at the same time?
    4. N/S/R seat back release knob missing £3.48.
    5. Washer jet "T" piece broken. £53.27
    6. Fault codes for bank 2 O2 sensor.£273.88
    7. Rear exhaust cat bracket broken.£87.84
    8. The oil air separator pipe has collapsed need to replace the unit £288.00 if we can remove the very corroded bolts that hold it in place. If not we have to remove the engine and this would cost £930.00 to replace.
    9. Oil leak from bank 1 vario-cam solenoid has also contaminated the coolant pipes at the back of the engine. Vario-cam solenoid is £502.47
    10. Engine coolant pipes. £274.99
    11. Some surface corrosion to n/s brake pipes, we will just clean them up and put some wax oil on them.
  • Is this normal? It's painful to read.

  • And I grumble over £300 spent on the merc...

  • That resistor at £213,
does it come with a free two week off-season holiday for the Tech that fits it?

  • Washer jet "T" piece broken. £53.27

Does this involve removing 10 different panels and covers for access?

  • Was this missed by the inspection?

Why not replace the brake pipe for copper/nickel?

  • That resistor at £213,

does it come with a free two week off-season holiday for the Tech that fits it?

It's black with a pink band and you get a picture of the tech moodily drinking an espresso whilst he considers the epic task of fitting it.

  • I feel so much better about my possibly misguided £2,200 mountain bike purchase now (not including pedals or delivery from Wales).

    Thanks.

  • Dammit earlier

  • With extra boka?

  • or boke... or something.

  • Oof. This sounds similar to my Dads experience (late 90's 911). It did end with him getting a very sorted car, but it was a painful and fairly slow process.

  • So total spend once these bits are done must be pushing £25k? Still great value for a properly sorted 180mph 4 seat supercar.

What would you have to pay for a Lambo / Aston / Ferrari of that age? Loads more and they would still be average to drive and less useable.

    #isthishelping?

  • To finance a 991 Targa (new) would be ~£1,600/month for 36 months, then a final payment of just under £50,000. It's a 100k car.

I bought my 996 in September and will have spent £2,750 per month if we divided where I'll be after I pay this latest bill over the eight months of ownership. Of course, for each subsequent month where I pay nothing that cost goes down.

Looking at it, and I agree that this is insane, I think I'll be at just under 30K by December.

That'd be £1,875/month at that point.

Maybe I should review my policy of buying older cars?

Anyway, that probably means that the engine will blow up in January 2018 and I'll be out another 10k on a rebuild to 3.7 litres.

  • What would you have to pay for a Lambo / Aston / Ferrari of that age?

Much more. The comparison is probably between my car and a 964 - and I would imagine that I'd probably spend the same on the 964 that I've spent on the 996, but the original car would be 30k instead of 9.5

  • Yep. I reckon to get my 964 to the standard you're after it would need £6k worth of odds and sods and a £10k engine rebuild to sort the oil leaks.

Luckily I have low standards and 964s have a plastic tray that catches the oil drips.

You'd be lucky to find an average one for £30k now. That's shitter territory.

They are the best 911 though.
