  • I attended a talk given by Chris King, he said that metal PF30 bob shells could be tapped for T47, just as long as there was enough metal there.

    He makes T47 bb's, conceivable that he knows what he's talking about.

  • Excuse the wonderful carpet (new house). A mate reckons it can be repaired with a 2 pack epoxy and a vice, I have neither the previous knowledge nor the vice, anyone fancy a go for beer?

    I've also discovered that a second hand SRAM red 10 speed crank I picked up last year is BB30 and apparently compatible with 11 speed. Anyone had any experience, slightly concerned about reports of flex in that particular crankset but it'll be a shortish term option as I'll get rid of the CAAD once I qualify for a new cycle to work cert in a couple of months.

  • surely that is a warranty claim. crank looks hardly used and its just coming apart like that. have you spoken to cannondale?

    I was looking at the design of the arms when I read your post. It's odd, because the threads that accepts the removal tool seems to be only on the outer half of the arm, but the axle is pressed on to the inner half... so when you use the removal tool, you are pulling the inner half off the axle through the outer half of the arm - which I would have thought would make it susceptible to ^ this type of failure.

    tl;dr if you used the correct tooling and torques I'd get on their case for a warranty replacement.

    That said, you are supposed to remove the NDS arm and whack the the axle and DS arm out with a mallet.

  • Used their correct extraction tools. The cranks were on a Supersix HM purchased a couple of years ago so assume they're out of warranty now.

    You're right, the design is great for the forces caused by pedalling but seems obviously flawed with regards the extraction process.

    Yeah. Not sure if they have a different warranty on cranks like they do shocks, but because the original bike is long gone I assume it's not going to make your life easy.

  • I think it's a year on non-frame items unfortunately.

    My pain over the matter has subsided, the Supersix was paid for by a car hitting me (their insurance) and then my insurance paid out the full value of the Supersix when I (someone else) wrote it off racing last year so the cranks have effectively cost me nothing twice over.

  • They're still on the bike. Just to compound matters the mechanic who re-fitted them after replacing the BB has tightened the other crank so much that the allen head sheared off my wrench when trying to get the outer bolt off. As I said, it wasn't a good day.

    I'll prob have another go at getting the other side off then knocking out the spindle before seeing what I can do with the drive side cranks.

    @swedeee will do although I've only heard bad things about their customer service.

    Maybe you should have a word with the shop - sounds like the installation was bad. The bolts are supposed to be 40nm, so not 'wreck ya tools' tight.

  • Update on my CAAD woes, it's on its final warning and has a period of reprieve.

    I've purchased a wheels SRAM adapter for £30. Unfortunately the new SRAM red cranks I had were 110 BCD so would only take smaller chainrings (none of the arguments could persuade me that it was a good thing to downsize the gearing on my race bike). I've purchased a new 53-39 SRAM Red chainset for £250 and can hopefully sell the compact rings for around half that so I'm not too much out of pocket.

    If the frame behaves and doesn't creak for the next few months I'll keep it, if however it decides to do its usual thing I'll hit up my new cycle to work scheme (was planning to use this for a track bike) sell it on ebay and never, ever touch Cannondale again.
