I basically learned analog SLR photography with an AE-1.
No there's no major differences; the A1 is a bit tougher and heavier and capable of full auto mode.I'd get any of them you can get in a good condition for a reasonable price.
That OM2 amey mentioned is a nice camera as well.
If I were starting analog 35mm SLR today I'd definitely go for a Pentax ME, they're smaller, tougher, and have a lot of lenses I really like. -

cheers for the advice, i'll keep an eye out for all three and try to see if i can get one for ~£60

I already have a pentax ME fortunately, and its been great, just looking for something that allows me to pick both shutter speed and aperture.

..Pentax ME Super?

Considering it, would you recommend the Super over any of the Canons?

Let's put it this way -
As I said the AE-1 was my first SLR and I shot it for years. Some day it got damaged by water, and a friend gave me his ME. I instantly liked how it felt in the hand / shooting it, the fact it's so little, and the uber-smoothness of focussing the (Pentax-M) lenses.
Many years later, and after shooting all sorts of cameras I bought another one, and shot it with the 50/1.7 and 28/3.5 and loved it; I then noticed that the lenses were rendering the images differently, quite "bitey".
Nowadays things have changed again and I don't care so much about lens character, have seen an image the other day that I really liked and then read it was shot with an AE-1 with the standard 50mm - so there you have it.tl;dr - just shoot a system that feels good in your hands!

A mate gave me an old XA3 "which might work, but probably won't". I put a battery in and found an old roll of superia 200. Just a test roll, experimenting with different light situations etc. Not particularly interesting photographs, but the camera is technically brilliant! Really impressed with it- every frame was exposed perfectly, and I love the backlight compensation- such a useful feature. I think it's going to live permanently in pocket from now on.
Excuse the dusty scans. -

Love it, especially the first two.

Nice shots and the XA range never fail to deliver. Love my XA, always meters correctly!

So I have a lust for a Leica M7 and a Summicron 35 F2 lens, any pitfalls or things I should look out for and is it really as good an investment as I think it is in my head.
Thanks in advance.

M6 because not electronically operated like M6. Zeiss 35 f/2 also good and roughly less than half price.
Great cameras. Cant explain why. Just got a second M6.

I read about this, but apparently the 7 has AE which is really good if your going from dark to light or vice versa. Dont quote me on this read a thread where it was split and theres not much money between the more modern 7 and a 6?!
Zeiss could be a good option as the 35 summcron is a grand or roughly.
