I have mounted more than 150 wheels without a sphygmomanometer
Endless euphs.
This is a sphygmomanometer btw, glad wheelbuilding doesn't give you high blood pressure:

Ha, I suppose so!

Been directed here from "any questions answered"...
I'm 95kg.
Open pro rim, laced to dura ace low flange, 32h... But radially which is something I've never had. Any risk of catastrophic failure beside occasional out of true?So far I've been told it looked crap (I haven't build the wheel, I've only ever tried the tri cross Sheldon Brown), which is an opinion I'm happy not to challenge...
It's just that failed hub picture on last page that makes me wonder... -
• #5982
Just build it 3x. I honestly don't see any reason to build a wheel radial, unless you have a 16H hub or are REALLY chasing weight or aero
-
• #5983
Risk, yes. Big risk, probably not. Bigger than it would be if it was laced 3x.
-
• #5984
I'd hope 3X would be no risk...
Sounds like I'm going to relace then... Which I was prepared to do so not a big deal...

REALLY chasing weight or aero
Don't think I'll ever be into this in my cycling life...
Thanks for the answers!

Never say never. But 3x is going to be a risk of the so-vanishingly-small-it's-not-worth-worrying-about variety, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Because risk zero doesn't exist, or because it's about time I go on a diet? (95kg)
I fear the answer... :)

• #5988
Because risk always exists. There could be a manufacturing flaw in the hub flanges which would fail even with 3x lacing. Doesn't matter if you're 95kg or 59kg.

What is he at risk of?

16H Kinlins are in the country. Well that opens up oppertunities I dont want to build but for people with DA SP hubs there is an option at least.
radial lacing NDS should not cause spoke failure. That is an old hub failure can happen and it has happened to me when reusing a customer supplied chorus hub. That was an uncomforatable phone call. Barely started tensioning as well.

Right, I've had it with my diy hacks and am going to step up my wheel game come payday. Any obvious alternatives to the park tool ts-8, park tension meter and whichever dish tool is cheapest? Within the same-ish budget I mean. Not getting a DT swiss stand for 1200 euros ;)
-
• #5993
Dont get a dish tool, just flip the wheel round in your stand

hi sorry to post a bit of a newbie question, and not 100% sure if this is the right thread but looked fairly appropiate. Anyway, if i bought a tubular wheelset second hand, once the tubulars are worn down/punctured whatever, can i just chuck an inner tube and my current tyres onto the tubular rims? thanks for any help, im only young and new to this
-
• #5996
Unless you're planning to stitch the tyre around the inner tube and glue it onto the wheel, then no. Best start reading up.
All of this thread for starters

Only if you have the strange Wolber Mixte rims. I don't think even @Gaston has Wolber Mixte rims, and his rim collection is taller than you are :)
-
• #5998
Short answer, no. You'll need to get a new tubular tyre and glue it onto the wheel.

Looking to replace the rims on my Hope/A23 wheelset. Any recommandations for something black, 601 ERD, tubeless ready and rim brakeable? Price around DT R460 or less, weight not much of a concern.

I've got a campag record front hub that's in pretty bad condition. Badly pitted bearings, cup and cone. What can be done? Or has it had it?
Okay. Interesting work, quite a fascinating spoking pattern experiment.
