I'm surprised to see Luddite tendencies in the MTB thread.

MTB and road stack/reach don't really compare. You could be looking at having your bars 30-50mm higher and 20-40mm closer on a trail bike than a road position. You don't want to be going over the bars when the trails point down. The current trend for MTBs is to have a long top tube, slack head angle and short stem. My colleague went for the 15inch, absolutely loves it and her husband then bought the same bike in the next size!

as long as you can separate the .wht files from the .chff files then you might be able to save the file.

i'm not completely sure about what counts as more fun
Less suited to covering ground efficiently with the minimum of fuss. ie smaller wheels to be more lively/less comfortable (delete dependant on viewpoint), geometry designed to make descending faster and less nervous (whut we just designed the wheels to make it more nervous)/climbing more floppy and front wheel more likely to want to go over your ears etc
Possibly best summed up as if you go on a group ride and everyone stops at the top of a climb to rest/descend/session/talk, do you:-
a) get pissed off - get a Spark/Scale
b) fire up the go pro and don your knee pads - get a fun bike
I'm at z) - I don't stop which is why I have no friends

Which category is "Let everyone else gather/chat/session jumps at the top of each hill, while you desperately try to get your breath back for the next bit"?

Whether or not there are other factors involved, or if it is a placebo, I've had loads of Alu framed hardtails and nothing has ever come close to my 853 cotic soul in terms of smoothness.

I love the Cotic Soul. My friend has one but the new bike price is £1699!
sigh, too big for me: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cotic-Soul-26er-2012-medium-/282444265764?hash=item41c2fd7924:g:iwcAAOSw4A5YxaIr

I built mine up from mainly second hand parts (including frame) for about £8-900 I think. Deals to be had on eBay and elsewhere too.
How small are you that a medium is too big? That's a great bargain, no love for 26" anymore but it's all you need.
-
• #10090
problem is smaller sizes are difficult to find. Will keep an eye out.
-
• #10091
Yeah, see above edit re sizing.

@BareNecessities good spot, that's a good deal. Also don't worry about scuffs to paint the quality of the paint on mine is poor, scuffs very easily.

I'm 5'5" -- female length arms (that isn't a sexist comment, the arms are attached to a female). According to the cotic website I'd need a small.
How do you feel about the sizing?

• #10095
thanks! contacting them now.
is that a good spec? I know nothing about MTBs!
-
• #10096
That's a cracking spec really. The main thing to look out for is the condition of the fork internals, but you can never be sure until they're taken apart :-)
-
• #10097
I mean, you can look for visible wear/ oil leakage around the seals. etc.
The mixture of Chris King, Hope and SLX bits is spot on for reliable stuff though.
-
• #10098
Thanks for the spot! I've just sent them a message.
There's also this but £££

Even if you had to replace the fork (which I would expect is unlikely) it's still a great deal for the frame/brakes/group etc

what would be a reasonable offer?
