Let's put it this way -
As I said the AE-1 was my first SLR and I shot it for years. Some day it got damaged by water, and a friend gave me his ME. I instantly liked how it felt in the hand / shooting it, the fact it's so little, and the uber-smoothness of focussing the (Pentax-M) lenses.
Many years later, and after shooting all sorts of cameras I bought another one, and shot it with the 50/1.7 and 28/3.5 and loved it; I then noticed that the lenses were rendering the images differently, quite "bitey".
Nowadays things have changed again and I don't care so much about lens character, have seen an image the other day that I really liked and then read it was shot with an AE-1 with the standard 50mm - so there you have it.
tl;dr - just shoot a system that feels good in your hands!
