Long distance routes that the Pendolinos are on often have people checking tickets before getting on the train.

I think it was a pendolino from Carlisle to Euston that I was on. They were very cool about helping me get the bike on (so they fucking should for £110) but they most certainly were checking bike bookings and I'd not risk trying to get on one without a booking for the bike. 99% chance you'll get the bloke who wants to ruin your day.

buy a cheap day return to watford/somewhere very close? Not sure from memory if the barriers at euston are platform specific actually, but usually any ticket will open any barriers, even oyster. Admittedly this plan may not be the best but if you've already got your tix for your trip on friday then you've not much to lose i suppose.
