How tight does the chain need to be? I've not really done much urban riding on a fixed gear, mostly on the track or round where I am there are no traffic lights, quiet roads and I barely ever have to stop to be honest.

I've always run a bit of track slack and not had any problems, is it a safety thing for when you have to slam the anchors on or something?

Track slack are fine for track (obviously) but a bit risky on the road especially without a front brakes.

My way is for the chain to look straight, but lots of movement up and down.

Don't go too tight, it will accelerated wear and tear as well as binding the chainring, you can feel it when there's an obvious soft rihihihihihim feel from pedalling.

Ah OK, so it could potentially slip when you try to put resistance on the pedals to slow it down? May have to tighten mine as it will be getting an outing in the city soon!

Potential for the chain to come off more like, which can happen when slowing down.

Great fun bike, and running bigger tyres is a benefit. Unless they're shit tyres that puncture on the return leg of your first commute.

Can't wait to get it on the road again.

looks like you're riding a 53cm roller with relatively small bodyheight, am i right? Would you recommend it?
Im 5'7 and cant decide if i should go for the same setup or the 49cm with alot of spacers

I'm 5ft 6in and ride a 53 with riser bars and it's absolutely fine, if I slammed the stem and rode with drops I'd be able to replicate a similar position to my 52 road bike and more aggressive than my 52 CX bike.

I'm about 5'10, with short legs and longer upper body. The 53 fits great with 10 or 11cm stem, depending on the reach of the drop bars. My saddle height is about 68cm.

^ that sounds like roughly my experience. I'm roughly those dimensions and finding a 56 too big, I'm too far back over the bb.

Anyone have a 53 frame and forks they'd like to sell??

Anyone tried / seen someone adding canti mounts to a steamroller frame? I want to hit the gravel paths with mine and tinkling disc brake at the front and v-brake at the rear.

Or will calipers be alright?

calipers will work, and have seen good clearance on it, personally worth going from there and see how it fare.

The question is how much will it cost to fit canti mount on vs. buying 650b fixed wheelset with G-One (or similar) tyres with Tektro R559;

I actually have a spare one lying around, should fit them on if it work fine with the 700c wheel, because the space inside the caliper is massive allowing more room for mud to go through.

Googling found me this Steamroller with 650b!

Supposedly 26" disk trucker fork is a good match, geometry wise, for the steamroller. £80 from triton.

650b's would be nice but out of budget. Trying to do this on the cheap

Start with how the tyres clear it, then worry about canti mount if you end up wanting a bit more oomph?

There's some good selection of tyres for all round riding, like the Schwalbe CX Comp in 38mm (very cheap), or the G-One in 38mm.

I heard this before I bought my Kinesis CX disc fork. The difference in rake is pretty imperceptible and the change in A>C height was offset by taking another spacer out from underneath the stem. Still rides like a beaut, just stops in the wet too now.
