  • Change the fuel to bio diesel.

Worry about busses and taxis....look at what happened to pollution on bus strike days.

  • I heart those.

They're not exactly a direct descendent of the 250GTO, but if I ever get rich I will get one for shopping.

  • If it's anything like my 2010 Renault, everything on it will break.

  • Passed by a blue one at speed on Sunday, gave the group no room at all and was generally driving like a total cunt. Sample size=1

  • That was me on a test drive. You Lycra louts should stop hogging the road.

  • French hatchbacks are supposed to break down, it's part of their heritage. Like Campag being shit at gears.

  • Swap it for the MG Hammer?

  • Re the megane - I haven't driven the sport version, just the bog standard one and it's utterly dull. I think renaults are a bit like the Eurovision - cars for people that doesn't like cars and music for people that doesn't like music

  • Honest opinion, if you're driving it on the road, you're not going to look like you're trying to cling to your youth, just look like a bit of a pleb. If taking it on track you'll look just fine. Ditch those wheels though.

  • That doesn't correlate with reviews of almost every Renaultsport model ever.

  • Although I agree for the boggo versions with the very odd exception. I quite like the Captur for a little family thing.

  • So my 3 week tour of North America has currently cost me about double what I expected, and will continue rising since I'm still here, thanks BREXIT and strong USD.

Since we can't all have obscene cash flow I've had to do some proper thinking re: MX5s and I think I'm ready to throw in the towel. I no longer think it's sensible to spend £3k turning 2 MX5s into 1 "perfect" MX5 to solve my rust issue.

    1. I don't think I can afford it any more
    2. It won't add 1p to the value of the end car.

If I sell the white one on and break the grey one I can have about £4K in my hand and maybe I should just buy something else.

I'm mostly pissed off because the garage said all the welding would cost £3k and it wouldn't be cost effective, it would be significantly cheaper to buy a 2nd rust free car and do the swap. Now I've bought the 2nd rust free car, a quick but not an actual quote to do all the swapping comes to... £3k. In my experience, always add on about £500 by the time it comes to paying.

I'd rather do it myself but I have nowhere at all to do it and renting a unit would end up costing me about the same in the time it would take to complete the swap.

If anyone has the space and the required equipment then I'd be willing to pay a decent chunk of money for renting space and equipment.

  • I don't have a license and know very little about cars but a few 'le googles' and I got my wife's car ready to pass its MOT which it did today. I also got a quote for car insurance including me on my provisional for 200 quid cheaper than just her on her own from last year. And I had a two hour driving lesson today in which I didn't stall or do anything stupid. So all in all I'd say today was a vehicular win.

  • No you don't unless you like terminal rust and patchy I mean non existent in some places zinc plating.
Those that are left prob the ones that actually were coated, at least with something. Worst car we ever had, got crushed at 3.5/4 years old, terminal rot on rear end pickup points

  • A lot depends on where the car has been driven and now it's stored, and of course how it has been maintained. I think that the odds are stacked against me on this one however.

  • You got sloppy holes in your bumper to arch liner area? I used chunkier rivets and put a metal washer on the far inside surface for the rivet to swell up against, gets a much better fit then the factory arrangement ever would have.

  • I'm sure they're more fun with more power and decent handling, but every time I sit in a Renault I think "what the fuck were they thinking when they designed this"

  • "what the fuck were they thinking when they designed this"

    je ne sais quoi ?

  • Although I've only used them as rentals I always thought the renault twingo mk1 was a brilliant little car especially given the price (in France obvs).

(I also really liked the kangol.)

  • hmm

  • It's full of little annoying things that shouldn't reach production. Smallest button ever to turn the radio on. Two dials on the radio, guess which one handles volume... the small fiddly one.

There's turbulence where the rear door closes so there's a dirty patch there even when the rest of the car is fairly clean

Turn on seat heater? Fumble down by the seat itself. You'll get an indication that it's on on the info panel, but not the actual setting. No indication when you turn it off

To me it reeks of budget decisions and/or sloppy designers

  • For 1993 I think it was a really modern looking funky car.

@kboy - in fairness I don't think I've driven a Renault for a while. I just really like the Twingo.

  • ^ agree on that, I dig that one

    I'm talking 2015ish Megane

  • You got sloppy holes in your bumper to arch liner area? I used chunkier rivets and put a metal washer on the far inside surface for the rivet to swell up against, gets a much better fit then the factory arrangement ever would have.

Drivers side only and yes, and I had arrived at the same conclusion, I'll buy a rivet gun and some repair washers when I get back from Colorado.

  • On the Renault chat, I very nearly bought a megane gt220 estate. Great engine, brilliant intake noise and proper turbo rush at 3000rpm. Nice manual gearbox, excellent supportive seats and well weighted steering. The test drive had both me and my wife smiling and ready to hand over cash. But... Interior felt old, as in a decade behind in design terms. And a bit cheap. Lumbar adjustment lever fell out, roof lining sagging near sunroof. Rear seats hard as a rock. And general fit and finish was rubbish. So, no buy! Also the fact that the same car is still in the dealer a year later means we would never be able to resell either.
