Removing Lockring from Freehub without cassette

Stick it in a vice and turn the wheel.

    Is a good way to strip the threads on the lock ring. It is not a freewheel.

Not if you are careful and know what you are doing........

But of course turning the wheel the correct way to remove the lock ring i.e. anti clockwise will acheive nothing as the wheel will turn freely as the freehub will do what it is meant to do, turn freely in an anti clockwise direction. In this case people may be tempted to turn the wheel the other/incorrect way against the action of the freehub pawls so they feel resistance with the chance of now either breaking the freehub pawls or stripping the threads on the lock ring.
