  • Funnily enough, both sidis and kask don't fit me very well. Wrong shaped feet and head, I guess.

  • Only meant them as examples! Lots of others out there who mainly do one thing.
Both fit me ok. Guess I must be Italian.

  • London Bicycle Workshop lists them online. I guess that means they have them in store

  • Nice one, cheers. I'll try to get over there at some point soon.

I popped into cycle surgery on the way home and tried a selection of kask and giro helmets on. I seem to be at the top end of a medium in both, and weirdly they all seemed to fit OK. I don't know what's happened since I last tried a protone, but I wouldn't say no now (for the right price). The Giro Synthe was nice too, but again very pricey...

  • If anyone's interested I stopped by cycle surgery, cycle republic and Evans this afternoon and tried on a bunch more helmets.

Settled on a medium Protone but have ended up buying it from shopto.net. None of them were able to price match with them, but can't really say no at £112...

  • Further to my last, I ordered the Protone from shopto about 4.30pm last Thursday and got an email later that afternoon saying it had been shipped. It arrived via dpd the next morning and they chucked in a free procycling.net bidon.

Excellent service all round and the helmet is spot on.

  • I had a look at a few helmets earlier. The ones I liked the best were the Giro Foray or the significantly more expensive Kask Mojito. Is there any reason to spend the extra on the Kask? Also, last time I bought a helmet MIPS wasn't a thing, is it worth spending the extra on a helmet with MIPS or is it just a marketing gimmick?

  • Get Giro Foray

  • Why's that? Also, any opinion on MIPS vs the non-MIPS version?

  • Mips is the new standard. A lot of helmet designs are retro fitted with Mips, which can effect the way it fits. I'd either look for a helmet designed recently with Mips integrated from the beginning of the design process or just ignore it.

  • Ah right, is it worth having then?

  • I've got it in my Bell Zephyr. It's cleverly integrated into that design though. I've not had another helmet with it before but I did try some with Mips added into older designs (like the Synthe) and the fit was a bit smaller as they need to retro fit the system into existing moulds.

I can't see a massive benefit to spending the extra for Mips if you're on the fence about it.

  • Cheers! It turns out the MIPS version of the foray isn't much more at all so might as well go for it.

  • Giro foray is on my shortlist. It's currently between that and the met strale. Also tried a bell stratus which looks great but fits too big in a medium. I've currently got 6 different helmets to send back to wiggle!

  • Giro are comsiderably superior to MET helmets IMO.

  • Im edging towards the met simply because it fits my seemingly narrow head the best out of everything I've tried. I like the giros but they seem just a bit too wide for me. I think the strale looks good. Maybe the quality isn't as good as giro or kask but I think it'd do the job just as well.

Would still like to try a lazer, how do they fit?

  • I tried on both the mips and non mips giro foray. I found the fit on the mips version a lot better. The mips does take up abit more space incase your are between sizes.

  • I tried one on the other day and the medium fit well but I'm not sure if it was the MIPS or non MIPS version.... I've ordered the MIPS version so will see how it fits, can always send it back if it's too small.

  • my 5+ year old kask k.50 evo fits so much better than my new giro atmos. i would get another kask in the near future.

  • I will forever associate giro atmos with lance.

    😑

  • Anyone have any experience with Bell Stratus? Yay or nay?

  • Tried one, liked it a lot. Think they come up a bit big though so I'm going to try a size down.

  • I have always used cheap helmets, the best one I've had was Kask Vertigo that I bought new for £70 .. it was wrong size, I needed a large, since then I downgraded to Rapido which was £45. Its comfy but the issues I have are:

    1. Its bulky
    2. Somehow fucks with the arms (?) of my specs (rapha) and sunnies (Bloc). They dont sit well at the back end. I had this issue with Vertigo but it was much worse as it was wrong size.

Given my head shape and size and having tried diff brands in shops I have to go with Kask and Large. Will Protone solve these issues? The most compact I've seen is Mojito.

  • Not just saying this cos they sponsor our team, but the Bell fit system has changed in the last year and their Zephyr helmet has fit all the odd shaped heads in the team with no complaints. We've also had Stratus helmets as prizes at our events and they've also fitted everyone perfectly so far.

It's always worth trying different brands/models from year to year as designs change and new fit systems can be a significant improvement on what you thought was good for you before.

  • I know what you mean re the sunglasses on the Rapido as i have this exact issue with my Kask Mojito which makes the whole setup uncomfortable.
Tried on loads of alternatives and the Protone / Evade/ Synthe all address this and do not have anything blocking the sunglasses arms.
